How long can you survive without Fluid...???

Recommended Posts

Help! I posted earlier, but things have not changed.

How long can you survive without being able to take in liquids. I am not talkign about Soup or yoghurt or even milkshake, I am just talking about water!

I cant drink anything at all... I am begining to think that I have something stuck rather than too tight.

I had a fill 2 weeks ago and I have been eating and drinking totally as I always do and have been doing for the last 2 weeks. Then out of no where yesterday I was unable to eat my dinner or drink coffee or tea or a glass of wine.

Went to bed and thought everythign would be ok and havent been able to eat or drink anything ALL DAY.

I am REALLY SCARED.

I already feel feint and weak, and I have a FULL day fo work tomorrow from 8am until 9pm

I have booked an appointment to have an unfill on Sunday, but is this too long away?

Has anyone else got any ideas about getting un-stuck.

I analysied what I ate yesterday and I had a couple of slimfasts, a biscuit, some cheese and many different drinks... coffee tea Water milk etc... Then whilst cooking the dinner I had a spoonful of sandwich pickle (brown chutney in sauce) and that felt 'heavy' on the way down and it was after that that I had the problems... Could there be an onion skin or Tomato skin from the pickle sat over my stoma or something?

Have any of you got ideas on how to dislodge or dissolve something in the way?

Obviously I also want to know how long you can live without Water. Its been 24 hours!!! All I can find out is that you can lose upn to 20% of your Fluid before serious problems... but I would not know how to measure that obviously!! I need hard facts like amounts of days!!

This is a serious desperate post people, please help. Also any ideas where I could go and see someone right now in the UK for a sort out.

About a month ago I made it about 3 days without anything staying down. I was trying to tough it out because my regular appointment was only a week away but by the morning of the 4th day I couldn't take anymore. I was hurting all over my body. You will get extremely achy after a couple of days. I was so weak. No sleep, eat, or drink for 3 full days. On the 4th morning I didn't even have the strength to call the doctor, my husband had to do it. They told him to get me right in. Strange thing is that I went 7 weeks with that fill before it became that tight. They took an entire cc out of my band & I felt immediately better. But I felt like I could eat anything. They made me wait 4 weeks before they would give me another fill & then only gave me .4 & I can still eat anything. That part really sucks but not as bad as feeling like I did for those 3 days. I thought I was gonna die. You will continually feel worse until you get an unfil. I'd go to the doctor as soon as you can get in.

Thanks JRFANN88.

To be honest you have put my mind at rest. I know I will now live until tomorrow when I have booked to see my doctor. I phoned their emergency line and am going to see them tomorrow.

I have been too tight back in August, but was eating still, if only a couple of bites. I was at least able to drink. This is an ABSOLUTE NIGHTMARE.

I am taking someone elses advice aswell to take liquid nurofen (i know you are not supposed to) but that person was only putting into words what was goign through my mind anyway.

In august they took 1cc out and i could eat anything and I put on 1 whole stone... its only int he last month I am back to having nice restriction, its so random how these bands suddenly get tight. I really hpe they just take a whisker out rather than a whole ml because I know I will gain again if I can eat anything.

thanks though, you have helped me a lot. Just knowing someone else had this makes it better. :frown:) Oh, and I am already in the achey phase, and tomorrow I have to drive 3 hours to London... goodness knows how.

Cheers

Bunny did your doctor say it was ok to wait until tomorrow? And you do know it is really not good to take nurofen (ibuprofen) on an empty stomach? If you can keep it down, you should be able to keep Water down too.

Hi R-M,

Yeah, their clinic is on Saturdays and Sundays in Londond. She is in Leeds (which is about 6 hour drive from here) right now. Her advice was to suck Ice cubes as much as possible and sip iced fluids (which I have tried to do) but I think that sipping is hard to substantiate, so I am going to use a teaspoon (5mls) and see how that goes.

I took Ibuprofen a minute or so ago, one of those little liquid sachets for babies, and I can feel it, but because its liquid, it might immediately help me out so I can at least get some sips of Water down. I am so parched and thirsy, not to mention STARVING... so we shall see. And yes, I do know its not good period to take Ibuprofen, but this is desperation right here. To be honest I was taking diclofenac or volterol for a whole year until my new doctor told me they were also the same family of drug as other NSAID's. So... I have thaken it before and been ok, although obviously I didnt know that at the time.

My last doctor was rubbish... when you have a broken band for 8 months and he keeps filling you, you kind of work that out, so I am so glad to have got with WLSgroup. They are great. I have met with her many many times now and I trust her very much. I am her first appointment as she steps off the train!

I am going to try and have a teaspoon of ice...

Thanks for your concerns and thoughts, I really do appreciate it. Its such a horrible thing when something liek this happens, you feel so alone.

Thanks for the replies, thought I would let you know that I had an emergency appointment this morning and had 0.3mls removed and can now drink again!

Phew:thumbup:

Thanks everyone.

Glad you are feeling better! Hope you still have some restriction though. I'm still trying to get back there after my last bout of too tightness.

I am having a similar problem, had a fill almost 4 weeks ago and thought I had reached my "sweet spot". Then out of the blue I can't eat anything! I can take in tiny amounts of Water, but my chest feels like there is a big bubble in it. I have been overfilled before, but knew right away, why was I good for 4 weeks? Oh yeah and my surgeon is on vacation, and he is the only one in my area to deal with lap band. Any suggestions or similar stories?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
