Sharp Pain Near Port Placed In Mexico

Recommended Posts

I have had my port for 18 months with no problems until now. I had it done in Tijuana Mexico with Dr. Gonzalez. I haven't had a fill adjustment in months. My problem started about a month ago. I had swelling, tenderness, and more protrusion than usual at the port site. I work in health care and often do heavy lifting and around the time that the pain started I also lifted a 50 bag of dog food. After a week or so the skin over the port turned red so I got some antibiotics from my primary doctor (Keflex 750mg BID for 10 days) which I just finished today. I am still having pain, when I feel around on the left bottom side of the port and press inward a little the pain is sharp and burning like a pulled muscle only three times worse. The problem is my primary doesn't want to treat this and has said go back to the doctor who did it. I contacted the lap band doctor's assistant and he just said go to a doctor even though I told him I couldn't afford to pay out of pocket for that. I have insurance but it doesn't cover anything to do with a lap band, and there are no docs near me that will touch a band placed by someone else(in Mexico) without thousands of dollars. What do I do any ideals on what this could be. Any input would be great.

You NEED to see a lap-band surgeon NOW.

The port area has possibly become infected, and that could cause a whole bunch of problems.

I really don't know why people go to Mexico for their surgeries....I know it's cheaper, but when this kind of thing happens, you are kind of stuck. I also feel the same way about people who travel long distances within THIS country for the surgery. You need to be within a reasonable travel distance from YOUR surgeon for at leat a year or two.

Having said that (didn't mean to rant), ask your Primary doc to refer you out to a LB Surgeon, and do it quickly.

There is a lot that can go wrong with an infected port area, and you DON'T want to have to deal with THAT mess!

agreed.

while i never had my port hot to the touch or red - it was very tender / protruded a bit more than normal & caused some discomfort after i ate.

my lapband dr ran some tests (endoscope/blood/sonogram) and i had a hernia right under the port. upon removal they noticed that i had a small infection at the port site - which was caught in time & healed after a good round of antibiotics.

infections can cause erosion......i'd do my best to get a lapband dr close to check that out or go back to original surgeon. it's nothing to ignore.

all the best!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
