pain in center of chest and back when i swallow

Recommended Posts

Banded 2 9 09 all went well but. I haven't thrown up at all and I am not nauseated at all. but every time i eat or drink I have a sharp pain in the center of my chest and back, it comes about 10 seconds after I swallow, it last only about 15 seconds but it is rather uncomfortable. Is this normal If it is how long before it gets better? bjt.

I suggest you chew better and take smaller bites. It could also be that you're body is getting used to eating a certain food. Sometimes I can eat something and then the next time I can't This journey is a constant trial of what is going to be ok and what won't. It's not really that hard you just have to be careful. Be willing to move to something else if what you're eating isn't working. You might want to go to soft foods for 24 hours just to let things rest.

Congratulations on your banding and contact me if you want to.

Vicki

You are still swollen. Small bites, very soft foods (you should still technically be on liquids by most postop instructions...you were just banded four days ago). It gets better, but the more you strain it, the longer the swelling will last. It will improve over the next four to six weeks. Make sure you are following your postop diet to the T.

Barry, was anything else going on when you had the surgery? I had the same kind of thing but I also had a hiatal hernia that got fixxed during the surgery, Dr said things were settling back into place. I do have a hard time sometimes If I do not chew good enough and some foods just do not go down well and so I avoid them now. definalty go to softer stuff and take smaller bites and sips of Water, avoid guzzling.. I had my surgery on New years eve and thinsg are much better now. Had my first fill today. woohoo!! Good luck and if things do not get better I would def call my Dr and talk to him about it. Some of it could still be the air from surgery if you had it laproscopic...Good Luck to you! Gina

I was banded on 2/9/09 as well and have to do full liquid diet for two weeks, then mushies for two weeks after that. If you're eating solids already you are either eating too fast or not chewing well enough, is my guess. Surprised you're able to eat them at all to be honest. I tried to eat cream of wheat this morning and put it down without even taking a bite...looked too solid for me at this stage!

hey, thanks for the advice , I haven't eaten anything solid just yogurt and Protein Shakes , but my neighbor said he had the pain for about a week and a half. He thinks my problem is that I not really expelling any gas. Talked to the RN she to take smaller sips and a little less, she thinks I'm still swollen and irritated today is just day 4 but I have no incision pain at all and still no upset stomach so I'm greatful for that. bjt:mellow:

Hi barry. I just had the surgery about 4 days ago and the same thing was happening to me (wasnt on to solid yet either, thickest thing consumed was protien shake or thinned out yougert) and I was really worried. Has yours gone away yet? Would be really relieved to hear that it was just temporary and normal....:)

hey I'm sorry your having a difficult time. Mine was temporary

after a week all was ok. the best ideas are chew chew and then chew some more, take small bites and make sure it takes you about 30 minutes to eat. talking to the nurse or doc is very nessesary to address any problems before they become big problems. it's been a long time since my problem, I've had to band now for 1 yr 6 mnths 470 to 255 feeling like the energizer bunny. good luck and be patient

bjt

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

We have to remember that everyone moves at their own pace. For some it may be harder to adjust, people may have other factors at play that feed into the unhealthy relationship with food e.g. eating disorders, trauma. I'd hope those who you are referring to address this outside of this forum, with a professional.

This is a place to feel safe to vent, seek advice, hopefully without judgement.

Compassion goes a long way :)

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
