Major Distress - don't know if it band related

Recommended Posts

It started last Friday. I had lunch with some friendsbut I had already eaten as had one of my friends,so we split a Butterscotch malt. IT was pretty sweet. As soon as I hot back to my office I had diarrhea. Came home, a few more bathroom runs and went straight to bed.

Saturday morning I still had some rumblings and did not keep my standard bowl of Cereal down.

Since then, nothing, not even Water, is staying down. It felt like more than just being stuck - I thought maybe I had a stomach bug.

I went to my GP, not very band savvy, and based on my symptoms, he too thought bug. He gave me a scrip for phenagrin. I could not take it as it would not stay down.

Yesterday was worse. DH and I decided it was time for the ER. I am dehydrated and such, so they started IV fluids and intravenious meds for nausea. I am still throwing up.

They let me come home with phenagrin suppositories and an oral med of the same variety that melts on the tounge. Still vomited.

Does this sound more band to anyone else now???

Yes, I have had 4 fills and 1 unfill. I am very sensitive. The last fill was on Jan. 15 and it was a 1/2 redo of what we took out the time before sometime before Christmas. I have no idea how full or unfull my band is.

It sounds like it started as a bug to me . . . but it culd be partially band issues now if you have had some swelling in your stomach with all of the vomiting. When I vomit my stomach swells and it will keep happening unless I go solely on liquids for a couple of days.

A partial unfill may definitely be necessary if you don't improve soon by 1)stopping the vomiting, 2) able to drink fluids.

I agree with Heather.... sounds like a stomach bug. But now with the vomitting, you probably have some swelling around the band. I hope you're feeling better now!

I also agree with Heather. Have you contacted your surgeon to see what he has to say?

UPDATE

I went to my LB doc's office first thing this morning and the ER doc called me and they both think it started as a GI bug that caused my stomach to get irritated.

LP doc is working me in to do an unfill for a while.

I will keep you updated. Thanks for the advise and suggestions.

There is a really bad stomach bug going around my area and it found me. Bad, nasty bug. From spending so much time in the bathroom, my stomach got irritated/swollen and I felt like I had a fill and was too filled when I didn't. The only thing I could keep in me was hot de-caff tea. Slowly getting better and am able to eat Soup and other stuff again. From what you are describing it sounds a lot like what happened to me. I think you will be okay in a few more days. Just take it easy. You don't want to irritate your already sensitive stomach again.

If you were fine prior to eating and no band issues, it sound more like food poisening or the flu bug.

Update #2

I live in a small, awesome, little town in TX. The ER doc I saw called my LB doc - small town or not I realize this probably happens all over but I am really grateful for ER doc's attention.

LB doc did not mess around and we unfilled my band completely to let my stomach heal and get back to normal. Said I could come back next week or on my next appt (March 5) to put the fills back in. (I don't have to start over with smaller fills, I can go right back to were I was.)

Both docs as well as my GP feel that it started as a GI bug that irritated my stomach and made it swell - hence the too tight feeling I was experiencing.

As soon as the unfill was done I was able to sip some Water. I am on Clear liquids for a few days then graduating as I can. Everything from my stomach up is so sore I can't do much more than that anyway.

So - for all those reading - if the nasty GI bug hits you like it did me and a few others on this thread - think about the band as you go through the GI bug.

If it suddenly starts to act differently that it did in the beginning call your LB doc. I likely could have saved the trip to the ER (but I needed the IV fluids at that point so it is OK) if I had clued in sooner on the band side of all of this.

And if you go onto anti-nausea meds and they don't work - take the hint - it could be your stoamach/band.

Also - my band is A-OK. No slippage. So seeking LB doc in a timely manner was important as well.

And finally - this board is so helpful - make sure and post stuff like this - the good and the bad is always help for others.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
