Aggressive Fill

Recommended Posts

I went in for my fourth fill today and I recieved .75cc. I have a 4cc band and was at 3cc with pratically no restriction. So, now I am at 3.75cc total and this is the first time I "feel" tight. Water is going down fine, along with grits and a WW fudge bar. But I have this weird taste in my mouth and it feels extra "watery", if that makes sense. I can't gulp liquid either, which I have always been able to do. I have a feeling that it is going to end up being too tight when I progress to solids. The surgeon no longer does the fills, and I am having doubts about the aggressive little nurse. What is your first sign of an overfill and how long does it take you to notice? Hours? Days? I really don't want to deal with an unfill and unpleasant isssues. But, as you can see by my stats, I am not progressing well with my weight loss. Maybe this is what I need??

The most important thing is that you can get your fluids down. If you get to the point that you can't, you need to go in for an unfill. You can become dehydrated pretty quickly.

This is according to my doctor, so yours may be different, but if you can't progress past mushies within two weeks, he says you should get some Fluid taken out.

The first sign is not being able to keep fluids down. But your doing that.

Another sign is not being able to keep foods down, which results in being stuck or vomiting.

I was filled too full and didn't realize it for a couple of months. Apparently I was indulging in slider foods and telling myself it was holiday cheer. And true to their name, the slider foods went down no problem.

Once the holidays were over and I decided to get back to business. I had fallen back into my old habits of eating carbs, wrecked my sugar (I'm hypoglycemic) and felt like I was starving all the time. I thought this meant I needed a fill!

I made an appiontment with the doctor and between the fact that I had heartburn for the first time since my surgery and from my 3 day food history, my doc said I was too tight. He told me to come back so he could look under fluro. I thought he was wrong, but made the appt, then tried my best to eat according to the band rules, I couldn't do it.

He took out .2cc and I felt better, but still fighting with the heartburn and still can't eat things I was able to eat before that last fill (back when I was LOSING weight). I haven't really lost since then.

Too tight is very frustrating, I'm looking forward to a little breathing room. Getting another slight unfill this Friday.

That wet feeling in your mouth, if you are like me, is your body salivating because of the tight band. When I eat something that doesn't want to go down, my nose runs and of course I slim.

Pay close attention to what you are eating and how it's going down. I found that eating slider foods without knowing it was like choosing the bigger/looser clothes from my closet while ignoring the fact that I was gaining weight.

Well, I just read your message and just this past Monday, I had my second fill at Prestonwood and I guess I need to get familar with how much I'm receiving vs how much I have still left. Bascially, I was still losing weight since my first fill was in Jan 7th and I was banded in Nov. I still had 3cc's left and giving an extra 2ccs more pushed me to 5cc's total and that was the wrong thing I could have done.

I left the clinic Monday afternoon fine able to keep my Water done. Yesterday morning, I woke up with a horrible taste in my mouth not able to swallow Water and feeling like something was stuck in my throat and could not breath. By 8 a.m. I could not even swallow my own slivia and by 9 a.m. I'm at my desk at work barfing at my desk. This was first time since having my surgery that I ever threw up. Really, if you have doubts about something being to tight take care of it immediatly. When I reached my doc's office by noon I was in tears and in pain and 2cc's of solution was taking out and within minutes all the symptons had dissappeared and I returned back to work.

I had my second fill yesterday morning and did fine all day....1.5 cc's, first fill was 2.5. I had a couple Protein RTD shakes and Water and part of a small fruit smoothie. Everything went down ok aside from a bit of gurgling with the water. I even took my meds last night and drank water till 2 am. Then when I woke at 8 and drank some water it would not stay down. I had that tight chest feeling and some pain. I decided to try a hot drink as I have read that it loosens some people's bands in the morning. I had a few sips and that set off some serious pain and I could not keep it down. I started vomiting every 10 mins or so and I swear I must have had liquid sitting in there from the day before. I sure didn't drink that much. I finally called the Dr's office and they told me to come in right away. I got .5 of the 1.5 cc's removed and could swallow water right away. I still feel too tight, but I'm thinking it is from the swelling perhaps since I went through so much this morning. I only could get down 1 small Protein Shake and a cup of non fat latte along with some water today. I have to stay on liquids for at least two days. I had lost 3 pounds in 24 hours when I went back today!! I do not want to lose weight that way. It was horrible and I cannot imagine the people I have read about who ride it out to see if it will get better or who are so far from their Dr they have to wait. Can anyone tell me how long it takes to feel better after going through that and having an unfill? How long before you are still so tight from the swelling?

That sounds exactly like my experience except he put my fill up to 2 cc and I felt the pressure right away and he backed it off to 1.5 which I thought would be ok. I also got my first fill one day before you on Jan 6th. I had really slowed down losing for a couple weeks and was hungrier but I really wasn't eating that much. I only had .5 cc's removed and 1 cc left in. I am worried that I may end up having to go back and have more taken out. I'm almost afraid to sleep tonight for fear of a repeat of this morning. Wasn't it the most terrible thing?

OMG!, that experience was awful! like yourself I was already 3 lbs down from the day before from being so sick. The only reason I went to work that awful Tuesday Morning becuase I had to finish a project by Thursday. It's amazing once the Fluid is removed the symptons went away. Wednesday was my first day back to exercising and I was still not back to 100% until yesterday (Thursday) and I was very hungrey. Well, are you still able to continue your daily routine without being sick? if so maybe wait first before having the extra fluid removed. Well, I do understand your worries, I too will see if I my weightloss will continue or be stalled until March when I will have another fill done.

It's Friday and I feel ok, but have no energy and a headache from not eating. I am not getting another fill until probably May because I will be traveling to West Africa in April and I hope the band is loose enough then so I have no problems. I don't want a total unfill for the trip. He gave me a needle and syringe in case of an emergency. I know now what that emergency might be like!!! I won't be getting that .5 cc put back!! I think the 1 cc added was enough probably. I'm glad you are feeling better. Let's hope we don't go through that again!

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

We have to remember that everyone moves at their own pace. For some it may be harder to adjust, people may have other factors at play that feed into the unhealthy relationship with food e.g. eating disorders, trauma. I'd hope those who you are referring to address this outside of this forum, with a professional.

This is a place to feel safe to vent, seek advice, hopefully without judgement.

Compassion goes a long way :)

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
