Food sticks but still hungry

Recommended Posts

I was banded Sept 30, 2008. I have lost about 25 pounds so far, at one point I was at a 30 pound loss but.... Anywhooo, my last fill brought my Realize band up to 5ccs total in it. I have noticed food will at times get stuck at about the level where my neck joins my chest. It feels like a hard ball is stuck in there. It will eventually subside but it is very uncomfortable. My question is this: If I am experiencing food getting stuck than why am I not experiencing restriction or a feeling of fullness? It is obvious something is different with this latest fill. However, any weight loss to date is of my own doing, not from the band. Anyone have a theory as to why I can get food stuck but still be hungry?

Some reasons could be that you're eating too fast, not chewing throughly enough (you don't want to chew until your food is liquefied, but it should be pretty mushy/pasty), or taking too big of bites. Those are the first things I'd consider.

Getting stuck is not a gauge on proper restriction, it is a gauge on proper eating. You get stuck if you are doing one or more of the following: taking too big a bite, not chewing well enough, eating too fast, eating too much or eating non-band-friendly foods. You may have been able to eat more freely before your fill but after a fill you always have to re-evaluate how, how much and what you can eat.

If you are eating too much or not staying satisfied then you are not at proper restriction yet.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
