Public Waiting List???

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I had my first appointment with a surgeon at the Avenue in Melbourne last week. I was so excited to take the first step!

Anyway, because it looks like my health insurance won't be availble until the end of October (was supposed to be April but it's a complicated situation...) he has put me on the public waiting list and said I would be a good candidate for the public list because he would recommend me as healthy and fit (as can be at my weight...) and if I got called up I would be operated on by one of the private surgeons from the Avenue and at no cost.

So this seems too good to be true! Has anyone else heard of this happening, anyone know what my chances are of being called up for a public place? I thought the public waiting list was years long??? So confused...

I think its shortened somewhat, due to more surgeons participating. I dont know how long it is though.

So that means, you could be done publically for free and if not, then your health insurance will kick in anyway by october and you'll get done then?

Nothign to lose really, is there? what a bonus.

Thanks Jacqui. Yeah, either way I will be banded by the end of October, so like you say, nothing to lose!

It would be awesome to get it done publically, my poor credit card could do with the reprieve! Either way, I can't wait!

Hey Tully,

My surgeon at the avenue did the same thing - put me on the public list. What I found was once I had made that initial appointment with the surgeon I COULDN'T wait to be called on the list and found the money to pay for it. But seeing as how your insurance doesnt kick in until October, it is probably the best thing you can do. Hope you dont have to wait too long!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
