i was banded in t.j. what i find is a kicker is finding local support...FROM ANYONE! at first i thought, it would be easy just comming on here, but just last month i realized i need to start attending support meetings. don't get me wrong, i love this site and its helped so much in my journey, but i would like to meet with local bandsters.

have you shopped around in canada for aftercare? would you be willing to drive maybe a little further for a better price?

I fortunately have a relative that started fill centres and support groups in the Toronto area its just sad that people are punished for needing care through there wallets. Although if you are a drug addict even a pedofile in this country your care is free.

Not sure but I think it's as likely that surgeons don't want to take on someone else's work. If something goes wrong who are you going to sue, the doc in Mexico or the one who is seeing you now? I don't like being responsible for something someone else did, so I can kind of see their point! (Not a doc either and don't mean to be hateful, just don't think they are all motivated totally by money. money is great, but it takes more than greed to make a good surgeon)

I was banded in San Antonio TX and plan to move in a couple years and know that I will have trouble finding a new doctor...I may be flying back here when I need help!

I hope you find the support you need; I'll be in the same boat eventually. Aftercare is as important as the band placement.

I can see they don't want to take on other peoples work but there are disclaimers you can sign as well I know of two immigrants who arrived in Canada with many medical issues, surgeries ect and all care including meds are paid by ohip. I guess you can get really technical my point is I wish it could have been affordable to Canadian's at some level after all obesity is a huge issue in this country I know it's easier to talk about how bad it is instead of actually doing something about it...

I really don't understand our politics etc here in the US and so can't even begin to pretend to understand what you have going on in Canada!

I just know that not all surgeons are greedy money grubbing people...any more than all fat people are stupid, or so on! (if that makes sense) In other words, aftercare is something we all need to line up if we're going to get surgery one place and live in another. It is a problem, apparently, everywhere. Surgeons often don't like to treat you if you were someone else's patient. At any rate, I don't speak for all surgeons either I don't even know one really! Just hope you find the care you need, as I hope I do when I move in a few years!

Well that is for sure the politics of the medical system is very complicated and bends in all directions. I am very lucky to have found after care here that is affordable and have a very supportive family doctor as well. The weight loss journey is going to save my life It's just sad that more needing people can't be helped either too scared to go somewhere else or don't have the money.I can try and help as many people by my positive experience and resources to after care here in Toronto its the best I can do knowing that is what somebody did for me and I will forever be gratefull for this oportunity. I wish you all the best..

I was banded in Mexico and can't afford to kepp going back for fills. I was banded in Feb 08 and have only had 1 fill. I didn't realize it was going to be so hard to find a fill. I'm very frustrated as I paid $8,000 and have only lost 20lbs. I know I need a fill but can't seem to find anyone here who will do them for a reasonable cost. Do you know if your nurse is still taking patients? I live in Barrie, Ont. Any help with this would be much appreciated.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
