According to my nurses, everything went well. However I did tell the anaesthesia that I was very sensative to the drugs. they make me hurl. So after a quick outpatient surgery I was sent home. Only to land myself back in the hospital that night. I couldn't stop throwing up, which worried us because of band slippage. The doctors said it was due to ...the anaesthesia!!! The hospital releases me the next day but now I can't get rid of this constant left shoulder pain. Because of the pain I am second guessing everything that I did. It did not make me very happy, and I can't stand pain.

It's just really hard to see a silver lining at this point.

Hi there,

That sounds awful--so sorry you're going through that. I'm 11 days post op, and while I have not had to deal with any throwing up, I can say that my shoulder pain the first week was terrible--almost unbearable! But it has lessened A LOT the past couple days, so hang in there, I'm sure it will ease up soon!

Take care of yourself and stay strong!

that shoulder pain is most likely (not a doctor) referred pain from your diaphragm. Just about EVERYONE has it to some degree....it's the nature of the band surgery and how our "innards" are configured. Your vomiting probably didn't help it but it didn't hurt it either. WALK WALK WALK. Having my husband massage my neck and shoulder muscle helped me immensely because it relaxed the cramp. Some use a heating pad (I hate them) but only use it on your shoulder, not your incisions. And take your pain meds as needed. It will pass.

Sorry to hear you are so uncomfortable with everything you have gone through. I am 13 days post op and also had the shoulder pain. It has gradually decreased and is now almost completely gone. I have used a heating pad, and ice pack as well. Both help with the pain for me. I also am trying to walk as much as I can and that seems to really help me. I hope you are feeling better soon.

I had pain in the top of my left shoulder for about a week. For some reason, I got some relief by putting my left arm straight over my head while lying on my right side.

I had my band on the 3rd. I am sorry to hear you are having so many problems with it. I was fortunate not to have any nausea or vomiting thus far. Gas pain has been a completely different story though. Almost immediately after waking up I had severe pain. The day after surgery was the the climax though and every day it has gotten slightly better. Gas ex strips, heating pads, and walking a lot has given me some relief. The Left shoulder pain is the weirdest feeling ever though in my opinion. I can't really describe it, but the one post on placing the arm above your head is dead on. That seems to be the one thing that makes it go away when I'm in the bed. I so wish you the best of luck and keep your chin up, it is going to get better and you still made the right choice..

Hugs and Happy thoughts

I'm so sorry that you feel this way. I was fortunate in that I did not feel nausea or vomiting after surgery. I had told them ahead of time that anesthesia makes me sick, so they put a patch behind my ear that was kept in place for 5 days and it helped SO much. I did have the shoulder pain like you describe, much like many people here. I will say that I took Gas X chewables like clockwork and also took my pain meds on a regular schedule. I tried to get up and walk at regular intervals too. All of this helped, but on day 4-5, I was googling how to get my band removed! After day 6 or 7, I started feeling SOOO much better. The pain in my shoulder went away when I was able to pass gas and have a BM. Just hang on a couple more days and my guess is that you will turn a corner and start feeling more like a normal person soon. You've almost made it through the worst part. Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
