I told a few people who were close to me of my desire to have the lap band and they eventually talked me out of it!

That's a shame. I find that there are people who, for reasons I can't seem to explain, are happy that they have "fat friends" and don't want that to change. I have only told a few friends and all but one were excited and extremely supportive. The one who wasn't, she's someone who can't stand when the attention isn't on her about everything. Even when I told her that I'd scheduled the date and I couldn't wait, she was like "That's great. I can't wait to get my cast off and my wisdom teeth pulled and my cavity filled." (That's a quote. It was a text message.) I was really upset, because for a little while, it's suppose to be about you, not them.

What I mean to say is, I'm glad you didn't let them discourage you forever. There are people who try to keep us down and we can't allow that.

And I've been considering bariatric surgery for the past year and a half. My doctor recommended it to me a while ago. It took a little while to convince my mother that it was a good idea, she was worried about her daughter having any kind of surgery, but is now super supportive. I'm just glad to have it done now. I'm in college and have health insurance, so why not take advantage of it while I can guarantee that I can afford to do it?

Last January I saw my friend whom I hadn't seen in a long time. She had lost SO much weight and told me all about her Lapband surgery. I was very interested and she asked what Insurance I had. I told her BCBS Florida and she told me right there "Oh well that insurance doesn't cover this surgery" ... so I didn't even talk to the surgen or anything. Around march I decided to go talk to them anyways, and turns out I have BCBS of South carolina ... random but I'm cover. Anyways after a few issues and a lot of stress, I got banded this pas friday! I wish I had done it a couple of years ago. And I haven't met anyone who has tried to talk me out of it. Everyone has been awesome about it. If they can't understand it and don't support you, they aren't real friends. At least that's how I feel about it.

Once I started thinking about it, it took me 1 day to call my doctor. My husbands cousin was banded before me and him got together. After seeing her and the family telling me that before surgery she was double my size and now she is in a size 12, I called the doctor. My oldest daughter will be starting school this fall and I dont want her being ashamed of her fat mom. I have always been the big girl in my group of friends and I am so self concious because of my weight and I decided it is about time I do something about it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
