Metformin for PCOS

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone!

I just wanted to share this information with anyone else that may be suffernig from PCOS.

I saw Pulmonary the other day and they suggested I try metformin for PCOS. He said he was afraid that seeing PCOS causes weight gain, that I may have trouble keeping the weight that I loose from the surgery off, he said Metformin would help me do that.

So I brough the name of the medicine to my Primary and she liked the idea and prescribed me 500mg once daily.

In addition to letting you all know about it, can anyone else who may be on it tell me how it is working for them?

THANK YOU!

Metformin tends to be one of the most commonly prescribed medications for PCOS because the syndrome goes hand in hand with insulin resistance. It has also been implied that PCOS doesn't cause the IR, but the other way around. So some women (not all) find that treating the IR alleviates the PCOS symptoms. But, as a syndrome, not everyone is exactly the same, so not EVERYONE with PCOS has IR and takes metformin. I take Byetta (an injectable that also treats IR) and Glumetza, which is a type of metformin that's more easy on the stomach.

Just a forewarning if you've never taken it before, metformin can make you INCREDIBLY queezy for quite some time. Stick it out and it WILL get better. I had to have pep talks every day from my husband.

Best of luck, and I hope the metformin helps you !

Yes, be careful with the Metformin. Many people take it with no problems, but I can't. It is really hard on my stomach. I have even pushed through and taken as much as 1500mg/day because I thought that might help me lose weight and get pregnant. In the end, it did nothing but make me sick. If it works for you (as it does for many) that will be great. Also, it is important to keep up with your lab work while on it because sometimes (very rarely though) it can cause liver problems. I think it doesn't happen very often at all, but when it does it can be serious.

Best of luck!

Hi Amy! Actually my doctor did say that she wanted me to get bloodwork done within 30 days of taking it to check on everything. I don't know how long it would take to tell if it is going to bother me or not but I've been taking it a few days now and have no noticed any problem. I have noticed my stomach making A LOT of noises but its been nothing that has bothered me yet. I think I am on a fairly low does of 500mg though.....

I took Metformin for diabetes and apparently it did help the PCOS because I got pregnant!! Be sure to take precaution if that isn't your plan for now. Nobody had told me that it could be used for PCOS. We had one child that was 21 years old and had decided no more after trying for so many years. I thought I was having symptoms of peri-menopause when the gyno said "you're pregnant!" We now have a 25 year old and a four year old!
