45 hrs After Operation and....

Recommended Posts

My name is Ahmed, and im from Egypt, 23 years old at the moment and Ive finally took the decision to make the lap band surgery. I feel 3 weird feelings

#1, soar throat and pain around the throat every time i burp or breathe deeply.

#2, cant take a deep breath, and sometimes pain in the stomach while trying to, is it cause of the incisions? or is it the band itself?

#3, pain at the shoulder?

Would be nice if you can share your experience with me, as its a new dilema for me and i havent called my Doctor yet.

Thanks!

That'll be from the ET tube the anaesthetist put down your throat, plus the device they put down into your stomach to measure it for the band. Will go in a day or two.

I had that too. You will have swelling and soreness around the incisions, but mainly around the port site. Again, this will ease in a day or two, though I get it occasionally now 5 days post-op.

#3, pain at the shoulder?

The dreaded gas is causing this. They pump the spaces between the organs full of gas to enable them to get to your stomach, without nicking the other organs/structures. The gas is pressing on the phrenic nerve in your diaphragm and shoulder. I've still got that too :)

Would be nice if you can share your experience with me, as its a new dilema for me and i havent called my Doctor yet.

Thanks!

This site will be a great resource for you.

Welcome to banding, Ahmed. :0)

All of these symptoms are perfectly normal and we all had them. In another week you will feel so much better. You are just recovering from surgery for now and the initial days are filled with some discomfort. It sounds like you are right on track.

Good luck and keep walking. It will help you feel so much better.

i agree w/ move move move. Move the gas around that's trapped in you. I still have shoulder pain sometimes. I think it's gas. 4 months post op

Actually the shoulder pain is usually "referred" pain from the diaphragm...and the diaphragm can be discommoded by gas, or swelling, or can just be "upset" post op. Rubbing the shoulder muscles can help (because the pain source is the diaphragm, not the shoulder, but those muscles spasm). Walking, breathing deeply (even if it hurts a bit) and following your docs orders will help you feel better quickly! :bananalama:

Welcome and good luck!

Hello Ahmed and welcome LBT!

Your symptoms sound normal to me. I actually felt the same way too! I felt better by day 7-post op. You will get there too! Remember to keep your Fluid intake going and keep walking. Both will help you with your recovery.

Good luck!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
