2 questions: Sick? Calories?

Recommended Posts

Actually the only other guidelines I have been given are - dont drink with meals, dont have 'liquid calories', dont snack and eat a balanced diet. Would anyone care to elaborate? Most of you seem to focus on a low carb, higher Protein type (...I hesitate to say diet...) "food plan". What sort of ratios? Atkins is going too far right? Do you eat sugar at all? Low-fat? Sort of a Southbeach thing? And why do you talk about eating your protein first? I thought I was supposed to eat my veggies first!? Oh dear I am rather messed up..... Its just that the word diet and all this thinking about food all the time makes me feel like crying :)

At 11 days out, I am supposed to still be on liquids (protein shakes, creamier Soups, etc.) or he said that if I can do it, do 2-3 weeks of mostly clear liquid and then got to the thicker drinks. How long did you stay on Clear Liquids?

I'm telling you, I had the fear of God put into me about my band slipping and one of the causes was eating thicker foods too soon, so I vowed NOT to vary from what I was told one bit. Fear is such a good motivator for me.

I just have invested way too much of my own cash to screw this up.

There are some good threads under the food section about suggested post-op diets. The most important thing is to get in at least 60 grams of Protein a day. That's your first priority, and because your stomach is so much smaller it doesn't leave much room for the rest. That's why most people seem to be following a low carb diet.

I'm surprised that you didn't meet with a dietician as part of your program - IMHO it's extremely negligent to send a banded person out into the world without clear instructions about what you need to be eating.

By the way, anytime you introduce a new question it's best to start a new thread. More people will view it that way and give you the advice you need. :-)

Fear is a good teacher and so is pain. Once you experience some pain it will make you think twice about doing or eating what you just did or ate.

I can't believe you didn't get the Protein lecture. If you want your hair, you will eat your Protein or drink it. One of the benefits to low carb is that you are able to eat more foods with less calories, therefore, you will loose more weight in less time. Once your band is "filled", as Anne said, you will have room for protein and not much else.

Be patient with your body. Soup is a wonderful way to go, just give it a try. I fixed a pot of Soup Monday and I was surprised at myself. IT WAS THE BEST SOUP I EVER MADE.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
