Hypoglycemics - what do you eat before exercise?

Recommended Posts

I want to start the Couch to 5K today and I have one problem. I'm hypoglycemic and when I exercise it invariably causes my sugar to drop.

I've tried dozens of things, but wanted to know if anyone has any suggestions on what may work the best. I was thinking about having either a snack sized protien bar or a bannana before working out, but how much before and what's the best choice?

This is one of the reasons I've always hated exercise. :cursing:

Hi,

Thanks for the response. I've been eating 1/2 banana and a snack size protien bar before I run.

I'm on week 9 of the program and my sugar is all over the place. I thought it would stabelize as I got in better shape, but it's not. Doc says I need more carbs, but he doesn't seem to believe in hypoglycemia. He's going to start me all over again with a glucose tollerance test. :-(

I have a portable orange juice with me - it is a great sugar jumper without being bad... just make sure it is 100% fresh squeezed or it could have sugar in it extra. It works wonders.

Thanks. I went to my GP to discuss my sugar problems. He's going to do another GTT. When I have my 5 hour test 19 years ago, they took me to the hospital in an ambulance. I'm really dreading the test next Fri.

Ever since I started exercising, I'm having trouble again with my hypo. Doc said I need to eat more carbs. I'm not so sure about that.

No offense, but your doctor is on crack. The last thing a hypo needs for stabilization is carbs. That is such an old school of thought and exactly what has made diabetics fat for so long. Protein, Protein, protein! Carbs will certainly give you the immediate rise, but then you crash again. Your foods intake and your body mass and composition are still changing - you haven't "settled" yet. Keep up the protein - if you want to have something before you work out, half a Protein shake is a grand idea.

Yeah, I kind of think he's on crack too. I made an appoitnment with an endochronologist for May 22. I haven't been to one since I was first diagnosed.

Still trying to get a handle on the sugar, but it has been a little better lately.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
