Post LapBand Constipation problem

Recommended Posts

Ditto the Miralax.< /p>

I haven't been banded yet but this has always been an issue for me. My doctor, GI doc (post colonoscopy and sigmoidoscopy) and my lapband surgeon have all recommended Miralax. I take a full dose some days, a half dose others, it has been easy to figure out how to adjust it for me. As another poster mentioned above, my docs reassured me this can be taken for life.

HTH!

Be careful with dried prunes/apricots. I had a TERRIBLE sliming episode with apricots that left me sore for three days (stomach).

I did have that issue... and was taking citrucel in my Protein shakes when first banded.

Now-

They make Splenda with Fiber and I usually have a few packets of those a day in my tea and have not been constipated for a long long time. That is all I need for now!

Yes! Starbucks is the ONLY thing that works for me! However, it doesn't work if it's not in the morning or if I have drank a little too much coffee! I think it might be the initial shock to the system!

This is a great thread! I am going to try some of your suggestions to see what works best for me! Pre-band I had no issues like this! I have just recently started taking stool softners to help, but it is totally hit and miss.

Does pushing really hard while constipated hurt the band? My stomach hurts now...

A few years ago my gastro doc told me the most non addictive secret to a regular BM is Metamucil and a Tsp of Milk of Magnesia every night at bedtime. It has worked like a charm for 10 years for me. I always have a BM every morning. The band and liquid diet had me off sink for a bit but now that I am on mushies everything is working as it should!

I have been having this exact problem since the day of my surgery 4/21... My doctor's advice was to increase my Water intake to 80-100oz per day, which is nearly impossible for me... Unfortunately, I take a chewable exlax once a week which clears me out, but nothing else has worked. After reading these posts, I definitely think I'm going to try the prunes route!!!

I was banded last year and this was/is a huge problem for me. I talked to my doctor, he suggested stool softeners (didn't work). I tried Fiber chewables (nope again). Prune juice worked- but maybe too well. For the last several month I have been using the Benefiber that u mix into any drink. It is my MIRACLE. it does just what is supposed to. No cramping. No nasty taste.

I eat Chia seeds (sprinkled on just about anything or eaten by themselves). They work great for producing a soft bulky BM and clearing out toxins from the intestine.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
