I was banded the 22nd and am also having really bad breath. I have a follow up on the 5th, so I am going to ask, but would love some info from banders that have been out al while also!

You are most probably in ketosis. Since you are not taking in any carbohydrates, your body is using fat for energy rather than carbs. Bad breath is one of the side effects of ketosis. Once you start adding carbs back into your diet this should go away. It's a small, short-term price to pay as you begin your journey to better health! I think most of us experience it - I know I did.

Its great to know our bodies are using fat for energy rather than food carbs..

in the last 5 weeks ive lost 35lbs & its great seeing a difference :(

Misty is correct. Ketosis will cause you to have bad breath. What happens is when your body burn your fat stores for energy it also burns a chemical that is in the fat cells which causes bad breath. If you add some carb back in it will be either gone or very mild. Make sure to not add too many carbs as your weight loss with suffer as a consquence. What I do is carry a pack of sugar-free gum with me or breath strips. Mouth wash also helps if you use it twice daily.

Happy losing!!

Gum wont get stuck. It has to be a large piece for that to happen. I buy "5" spearmint flavor and they are fairly small pieces so you wont have to worry about that.

hi debbie, I was just wondering if you could give me a sample of what you eat in a day as I am 14 days out of surgery and have not lost a pound! I did have major complications during surgery which did'nt allow me to exercise until now but I should have lost something, I am amazed at how much you have lost

Once you have restriction gum can get stuck...if so they can remove it but you have to go in to a doc's office. Safest to just use sugar free breath mints!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
