Will I adjust to these shakes?

Recommended Posts

I'm on day 2 of my pre-op shakes and right now could possibly eat 3 small children, one baby duck and my left arm.. hell, add my right one too! So I thought I'd better ask before I give Hanibal Lecter a run for his money, will I get used to this eventually? I have to do this for a month

You will.....believe it or not. I thought I was gonna eat one of my dogs for the 1st 3 days (jk), but then it got better and i am rarely hungry now. I started the pre-op diet on Jan. 22 since my surgery is on Feb 5 (gulp)

I promise it gets better. The slim fast low carb seem to fill me up more than the Eas lite - fyi!

Too funny!. Those of us who have been banded know how you feel, especially if we had to do the famous pre-op diet. You poor thing a whole month???

I never got use to shakes and never used them. They hurt my tummy. I asked my doctor to recommend other lquid Protein drinks and she recommended Isopure and NewWhey bullets.

The NewWhey has 42 grams of Protein and the Isopure has 40 grams. They are very filling. My doctor also allowed me to have one small meal for dinner high in protein.

If you can keep your protein up really high it will help with hunger. Talk to your doctor about other types of Protein Drinks. Ask your doctor if they would be willing to allow one small protein meal with two Protein Drinks for your other meals.

Every doctor has different instructions, so always do what your doctor instructs you to do, but it cannot hurt to ask him/her???

Good luck!

I didn't get used to my shakes on the pre-op diet--I hated them with a passion, and could only choke down one or two a day. As a result, I just got used to not eating.

Days 2 and 3 were the worst for me. I had horrible carb withdrawals! I drank Atkins RTD shakes. My doctor allowed up to 6 per day, and Yes I drank all 6 of them EVERYDAY!

It did get noticeably better by day 4 and by the end of the week I just wasn't really hungry anymore. I only had 2 weeks of pre-op liquids, but then 2 weeks Clear Liquids, and 2 weeks of thick liquids/mushies (cream Soups, mashed potatoes, etc.) post-op. I didn't eat real solid food for 6 weeks, and I lived to tell about it!

It DOES get better! Hang in there!

I had to drink 4 horrible vanilla Protein Shakes for 9 days to get ready for surgery. They all pretty much kept me full the entire time though. I got to the point where I just held my nose and drank them down as fast as I could :). Thankfully the Protein drinks I have for after the surgery are actually good.

I felt the EXACT same way! I am on day 6...the hunger died down by day 4....now I am just dealing with some noisey intestinal issues - fun fun! :)

I will be on Optifast until my surgery, Feb 17th!

I have to agree with the hunger...I thought I would surely pass out. It gets better once your stomach shrinks and I found that a quick 10 min walk whenever it gets really bad helps.

My DRs office sells a bariactric high Protein shake for a pretty penny. There's a hot chocolate that tolerable when you mix it with coffee - kind of a mocha:tongue2:

What I miss most is cooking. I love to cook but there's no way that I could do that & stay on course.

I feel like shit today - day two of Protein shakes!!

I feel shaky, irritable, nauseous, and have a pounding headache!

Is this withdrawal or just hunger?

I'm starting to get scared - if this is what it feels like after surgery, maybe I'm not strong enough for this! :-(

hey Melissa. Are you watching your blood sugar? I don't remember reading if you're diabetic. I am and when my DR put me on the liquids we adjusted my insulin & other diabetic meds as well as blood pressure meds.

Hi there! I'm not a diabetic, but I'm "sensitive" because I'm insulin resistant (sort of a precursor to diabetes that comes with polycystic ovarian syndrome).

It's been a rough day, but 2 down and only 12 to go!

Melissa Ann,

I understand completely how you feel. I am insulin resistant as well. I asked my dr about that and he suggested eating a pirce of fruit in between shakes. That made life easier and I was banded yesterday and am already off my metformin!

It does get easier!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
