*New* Banded 1/23 & still not back to work

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone. My name is Johanna. I was banded 1.23.09 and I still feel like poop! I still have a lot of gasses from the operation and they affect me most when I eat or drink anything. Shortly after doing so I will feel like a dagger is being stabbed in the middle of my chest and a little after that I'll feel it in my back. I feel awfully thirsty and having sips of anything only make it worse. :w00t:

Last night had to have been the worst. I was in tears and the pain wouldn't let me get comfortable enough in bed to at least sleep it off. When I was finally able to fall asleep it was around 1:45 am, then I was up again in pain at 4am.

Wearing my normal pants still feel every uncomfortable around the belly button incision, especially when sitting… Damn Gut! I’m hoping this won’t last much longer.

I’m really looking forward to finding some fellow banders to learn a few tips from.

Any suggestions or insights are appreciated.

To me it doesn't sound like pain from the band. It would be interesting to know if you have gallbladder problems. That sounds like the pain I had with my gallbladder before it was removed. Also, gallbladder problems tend to be triggered by food. I would suggest checking with your PCP or surgeon. I was banded on 1/16/09 and back to work on 2/20/09.

Since your surgery was on 1/23/09 are you suppose to be eating already? Are you on liquids still or mushies?

I would contact your doctor and seek their advice. I am sure they would want to know how you are feeling.

Good luck!

I'm supposed to start mushies today. I've been ok with mushies since thrusday because i was so so so hungry I coudn't take it anymore and had applesauce. It took me about a half hour to eat a small cup. This weekend I had an all natural shake with fatfree milk and I littely went to hell and back. I knew I was going to and i still drank it. all the bubbles of air should have been a fair warning.

I was just banded 1-19-09.I have the same problem. I have gas all the time and I burp all the time.My Dr. said I need to slow down. Even if I think I'm going slow she said slow it down more.So we'll see if this helps me..Another problem I have is I feel no restriction at all.So I really have to watch how much and how slow I eat.So good luck....

I was banded the same day as you and was back at work light duty on the 28th. I do know what you mean though. I was in tears with the gas chest pain one night too. They say to walk it out, but I had been walking a lot at work that day and had gone to the store.

Here is what helped. I have a cheap pill splitter, so I took 800mg of Ibuprophen, plus I bought some generic extra strength Gas-x liquicaps from Walgreens. You can swallow those whole. Sometimes it takes two of them to conquer a bad episode, but you shouldn't need more than 4 per day tops.

I also used a heating pad while waiting for that to kick in.

Mine finally got better today. I had a few pains, but nothing like before. But I also am on my feet all day, so that probably helps.

Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
