Pain - upper left side under ribs ? Anyone have or had this?

Recommended Posts

I was hungry for rice - I know it is not a food that is recommended I ate 2 bites of fried rice and it got stuck - wouldnt go down and I threw up. Not spit up full blown heaving. Ever since when i try to eat something or drink something I hurt and have pain -- I am scared I slipped my band but thinking it could just be sore muscles around it -??? I was banded Nov 20, 2008 so about 2 1/2 months out.

Anyone have any words of wisdom ?? Help

Some people can (and do) eat rice so don't feel guilty. You are sufficiently post op that odds are one episode of PB (productive burp...where you burp up a bite of food that won't go down) most likely won't hurt you. However one thing many experienced bandsters do is to go back to liquids for 24 hours after they have had an episode like you describe...gives the stomach area a chance to calm down. Often when you pb you will have swelling in the area...24 hours of liquids lets things go back to normal.

I can eat rice fine, but it isn't a favorite of mine (in any form) so usually it isn't an issue. However if you LOVE it, wait a few months and try again...making sure to chew it well, and perhaps alternate a small (SMALL!) bite of rice with a bite of something with a totally different texture.

My doctor wants all his patients to have no "banned foods" (except carbonation) and that method, I've read, can work. Also make sure the rice is well done (same goes for pasta) because it does absorb liquid and can swell if you eat it al dente or on the less done side of done. Well cooked, small bites, chew.

Until then try the 24 hours liquid. If you still hurt tomorrow, call your doctor.

Good luck!

Go on liquids for a day or two, so your pouch can recover. Right now it sounds like it is spasming.

P.S. I eat rice now and then without issue. Some people can eat rice, but it appears that it is difficult for you. I would consider not having this food for a month, since you reaction was not good.

As far as band slippage, that is a conversation for you and your doctor.

Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
