Paying for the band (student loans?)

Recommended Posts

Hey guys! I'll be a sophomore in college this fall and really would like to get banded. The main problem for me is the cost. No insurance, and I don't work full-time, so I don't think my credit union would give me a loan for the surgery.

Has anyone gotten a student loan and used the money to pay for the lap-band? Is this even possible and what are some good companies? I have excellent credit that I've built up the last few years, which I know is helpful. My score is in the mid 700s.

Any help would be great.

I have some student loans and I am able to use mine for whatever I want. I believe its the same with all student loans.

Have you checked into prices for the lapband? I was a self pay and it is pretty pricey. You might would need a few student loans to pay for it.

As for a good company to get it from........you should check with the financial aid department at your school. They usually have some good suggestions.

Actually, the hospital I'd be going to is one of the cheapest for lap-bands in the country. They charge $10,700, which is only a couple thousand higher than the Mexican surgeries. And this one is only a 90 minute drive for me. It's in Detroit.

That is a good price. The place I got mine done at was a little cheaper than yours but not much.

Thanks for your responses. This place is great. I think posting here would probably be a huge help after getting banded too.

I've seen a lot of older individuals who are married, have good salaries, etc around the forum. So I wanted to talk to some younger people and see how they're getting banded and paying for it. Any other advice anyone has would be great.

In order to do this you would have to take out a private student loan. I've seen a lot of commercials where I am(PA) offering up to $40k in student loans. I personally have medicaid, so that's how I got my band covered. I couldn't possibly justify taking out a student loan to pay for this surgery, my tuition is high enough and I'm in student loan hell or at least I will be when I graduate

IF you have good credit, have you thought about using a credit card? There are also a lot of Doctors offices that have finance companies you could go through.

The amount I have to take out in student loans is relatively low compared to a lot of other people thanks to grants and scholarships, so I'm thinking it might be worth it for me to use a private loan to pay for the band.

I do not have a credit card that is anywhere near a high enough limit to pay for it, and even if there was, the interest rate would be pretty high. The problem with the finance companies is that they ask how much you make in a year, and being a student that works part-time, I doubt they'd finance me.

I drove nearly four hours to get banded at the location you chose in Detroit. I used care credit for a portion of my self pay. Best of luck to you.

Ooh you got banded there? How'd you like the hospital and the doctor? Would you recommend it? I'd love to hear from someone who had it done in Detroit.

Dr. Laker was my surgeon, he was awesome! The surgery staff and nutritionist... Great!

The hospital is ok - they took care of my needs. I was well educated on what to expect and ask for (got all of that info from these boards). :tongue2:

Thanks for the comments everyone. Right now, I'm looking into a couple other possibilities. Though it would be worth it no matter what the cost to lose the weight, it's still so hard for me to justify taking out student loans with insanely high rates.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
