Had to ask.. how bad is the farting?

Recommended Posts

I am considering the LB and my surgeon mentioned that I would probably have gas issues (she has it and says she farts alot). Anyone having gas problems?

Yes, the gas is bad. Not sure when it will ever end or why it is happening.

I know that everyone is different, but I've had LESS gas than BEFORE I had the surgery. Had the surgery 11/5/08 so I'm 12 weeks out and I've not even needed a fill yet. Starting weight was 267 and now I'm at 211.5 (that includes what I lost on the 2 week liquid diet).

After I had my gallbladder surgery in 2006, I had LOTS of gas. I'm not sure if I should attribute the lack of gas to more healthy eating but I'm glad it's less!

OMG! My son thinks it is so funny. I have gas constantly. I will say this, it doesn't seem to have a smell (at least my gas doesn't), but it is constant.

OMG.... Yes-- Holy farting. For me it is out of control. At least in comparison to pre-band. I think that it may be that I am eating better foods with more Fiber now or maybe just due to the changes in my digestion. Either way-- gas mania.

I had it the first couple of months, but once my weight loss slowed it was not much of a problem anymore. What I did have seemed to affect more of the upper end with belching/gurgles and not so much the lower end.

My experience is similar to Heather's. I don't pass gas any more than before the band, but I do seem to burp more.

Same gassiness to be honest, I swear it is inherited from my fathers side of the family :)

i dont have any more gas post surgery than i did pre-surgery, but i kind of have this problem (blessing?) that i never really fart, ever. i do burp a lot more though. not loud belches, just silent burps, if that makes any sense to you.

Yay! Im glad that it isnt too bad for everyone  I am so excited. I heard that as much as 40% of people fail on the complications board. Does anyone know if it is really that high? I am really hoping that this is what works for me....

Yes, the gas can be bad. I even embarrass my son & DH sometimes. :) Thankfully it doesn't have much of an odor. I get it both ends. I have to admit I was pretty good at passing air before surgery but after it has been MUCH worse. Now that I'm 4 months out it does seem to be calming down, but I always belch long and loud after meals. I refer to it as pulling the plug. Sort of feels like when you pull the plug on a drain and it all swirls down the sink hole. Feels good. I think a lot of it must come from chewing our food so well that I think we unconsciously swallow air.

"Holy Farting"!! That's funny! Some questions hardly get any answer, but talk about bodily function and EVERYONE is in!! LOL I haven't had the band, YET! Just starting 3 month multi-dis. But I'm a hairstylist and don't think it would go over too well if I'm farting all the time--might lose a lot of tips on that one. lol

I think post surgery I have more backdoor gas, but my doesn't have much of an odor either. Definitely more burping than prior to surgery.

My seven year old son thinks it is quite funny though. I have let him know that calling someone out for passing gas isn't polite, but he always has a creative way of doing it. Last night when he heard the wind, he said "OK, who busted the Grumpy". My husband and I cracked up.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
