Octuplets and SIX other children??!!!

Recommended Posts

I agree, premature babies will always be premature! I have a friend who has twins that were born early. They are 3 now and they still aren't talking much. They also get sick a lot more compared to other children the same age.

This isn't true. My grandson was born at just 2 lbs. and he is thriving as a three yr. old now. He left the hosp. at just 5 lbs. or so, and he was just like any other baby you take home because they don't let you take them home till they are well enough. (like a full term baby)

Speaking of sick....I am dealing with a wicked head cold and cough right now and can barely handle my two very well behaved kids. I hope octopussy never gets sicks because taking care of 14 while ill will be some what challenging :rose:

I'm in the same boat, I think I'm working on pneumonia or bronchitis. I have a fever, I'm dizzy, and I can barely move. My kids who are living at home are 12, 14, and 16, and you would think they really wouldn't need much, but they do! (My oldest two are 26 and 19...and don't live at home anymore). :tongue2:

It's rare to get any rest when you have kids, and they seem to become more needy when I am sick. I still love them to death, but know that I couldn't handle 14 kids!

Actually Patty, you ARE wrong. The Medical Community considers babies born prematurely to always be premature. They may be doing great and thriving, as is my 9 yr old nephew, but they are always considered premature MEDICALLY.

Patty greene when you comment "This is not True" to what carrie_c posted you are inferring she is a liar. I would choose my words more wisely when posting. This was an experience of carrie_c friend and to dismiss it as false is just a radical statement, one of many posted by you on this topic.

I have no doubt your grandson is thriving and I am glad he is. But there are many preemies who have issues when they leave the hospital. Yes, a baby born early may leave the hospital as a full term baby, but many, not all, will have medical issues and developmental issues as well.

Preemies that go home from the hospital do have higher instances of SIDS. The link below is a report by the CDC. You do not have to go very far within the report to read about low birth rates and death by SIDS, see page 2 and 3.

patty, it is true. Premature babies will always be that! They can't suddenly become full term!! Like TQUAD said, there is always a possiblity of something going wrong. A lot of premature babies do delvelop just fine. But these babies are also multiples, which means they have an even higher chance of something being wrong. Don't get me wrong, I hope all 8 of them are just fine. I think octomom is in denial though that something could go wrong. When Ann Curry told her there was a possiblity of cerebal palsy, she didn't seem to believe her.

Who cares what the medical community says? Who are they anyway? The medical community aborts children, so I don't always take what drs. have to say as law. They may be 'considered' premature, but that's not what they are any longer. Babies that are born early are premature till they reach the 5 lbs. that is acceptable for them to leave the hosptal, which is what a full term baby is when they are born. (I will not doubt that some premies can have some problems in development later, but so do some full term babies)

Who are they? They are the ones with the education that have taken the time to learn what all prematurity does to children. I am not making premature infants out to be lesser, as I say my own granddaughter was a preemie, and according to her pediatrician, she will always be at a higher risk of certain diseases, as well as SIDS, and respiratory infections, due to the underdeveloped lungs that most preemies are born with.

Whether or not a medical specialist does abortions has absolutely ZERO to do with the prematurity issue, it is simply your way to introduce yet another religious issue into the thread, we are used to it.

We were told that where they used to require a baby to be 5 pounds to leave the hospital, they no longer work on that premise. The baby has to show that it can regulate it's own body temperature, and oxygenate as needed, although some are allowed to go home on oxygen. And that is for ALL babies, not just preemies. Our granddaughter was home at 4 pounds 4 ounces, she never required any oxygen, and was home in 3 days---because she warmed up, and stayed that way, not requiring any heat lamp beds....Her temperature regulated normally. She had suffered from intrauterine growth restriction for minimally 2 weeks, so they figured she had developed strength during that time despite the size.

On the other hand one of my best friends had a grandson recently who was born full term, and weighed in over 7 pounds, but was kept for 6 days because he could not keep his body temp up, and actually went home on oxygen for 2 weeks.

I for one, with my preemie granddaughter, and a grandson born at a mere 5 pounds, and incredibly grateful for the knowledge of the professionals in the medical community.

I cannot imagine the ups and downs in the future of these 8 babies! The risks for infants this small is huge.

Shalee--I am so glad your DD's are well. We were told girls do much better at those weights than boys---they have a higher survival rate.

Love how you can so elegantly answer Kat, I was just about to put in something not so nice in response to bringing abortion into a discussion so randomly like that...

I love my Violet, Oh yes I dooooo...

Hey, can you thpeak with a lithp? Might get more cha-ching. :tongue2:

I resthent your mockery, madam!

Another Octuplet Mom in LA?

California, send the bills to the Dr. Michael Kamrava!

No big deal, she was sent to a county hospital....hey wait...I work in the equivalent of a county hospital!! I'm sure there will be no repercussions for the poor hospital that has to eat this bill....

What's the big deal? That's how I look when I take my shirt off....except my lips are smaller.

I was not 'introducing' religion into the topic! I was pointing out that the medical community, as you call it, are mere humans and their terms for things don't always make sense. ( One example I can think of is why they call an ear infection and infection, and then tell you they are not 'catchy', since that's what the word infection means. (infectious). 'Calling' a premie a premie all it's life is stupid. My grandson was a premie when he was born, he no longer is one now. Premature is a name for BEFORE the normal birth time. Whether a child grows (matures) in the womb, or out of the womb, it will reach a healthy weight and become strong enough to not be in the hospital any longer.

I never said I wasn't grateful to doctors. just that they aren't all perfect. Without the drs. at Yale, my grandson may not have survived.

I cannot imagine the ups and downs in the future of these 8 babies! The risks for infants this small is huge.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
