Some Dr's are different in that they vary the length of time and what your pre op diet is.

The Dr I have wants you to loose 5% of your weight prior to surgery for a few different reasons. Main one is like you say shrink the liver. The liver is in the same area as where the band is going to be placed. If the liver is too big they can not get around it properly to do the surgery. Just loosing the 5% can greatly reduce the size of your liver. I personally have been on my pre op diet since I decided to do this which was the end of Dec 2008. I did it for a couple reason, one to loose weight but also to see that I could do it. I do 2 Protein shakes a day and a sensible dinner. I figured if I could not do it before, who was to say that I could do it after. And since I am self pay I wanted to make sure that I coud do it.

Hope that helps!

Julie

its very important to stick with the pre op diet, people have been turned away because of cheating, its not worth the risk..the more weight you can lose the better it is for the surgeon & reduces the fat on your liver to make their work easier for them..

good luck on your weight loss

Most surgeons require a pre op diet, mine did not, or at least didn't for me. It seems that most are requiring 2 weeks. You will have to ask your surgeon what he requires.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
