3 weeks to go, what should I be doing?

Recommended Posts

I am being banded on 2/19. My doc wants 10 days of low/no carb to shrink liver. What should I be doing now to make life easier afterward?

Is there anything you guys wish you had done?

Is there any item that you would have purchased?

I run my own business and need to do any and everything to minimize downtime.

I already have my list of about 100 things I want to do once I get my weight down.

How long were you out of work? My job requires me to walk, talk, and drive a car, that's about it.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Start exercising more if you haven't already. Don't let your post surgery exercise be such a shock to your body. And they say it will help you heal faster

Starting to exercise is a great idea. Additionally, you may want to start easing your way into a liquid diet for your 10 day presurgical run. If you start substituting one meal per day a few days per week, it will be an easier transition to going to full liquids in pre- and post-op.

I took 1 week off of work, but I could have gone back after 2 or 3 days. I was needing a bit of down-time. The pre-op time can get a bit stressful :)(and the exercise will help with that too).

I did a pre-op diet for 14 days prior to surgery, and I really think it helped get me ready for the the post-surgery diet, so the fact that you are going to do a pre-op diet is good. I was banded this last Monday 1/26 and after about two days I was working from home on my computer. You will probably have gas pains post-op from the CO2 that pump into you for the surgery. It ends up in your upper body (chest, shoulders). A heating pad and walking will help that. I used liquid adult extra-strength tylenol instead of the liquid loritab I was prescribed and was fine.

Hi JABBA THE MUTT Welcome to the Mens Room

The low/no carb is what I did before sure helped me. I also stopped eating between meals and continue to do so today.

Get yourself a log book and start recording your efforts now.

I record liquid, Protein, intake and mileage walked daily.

I only weigh myself on Sunday the start of a new week.

I bought a OMRON HJ112 Pedometer TO Monitor walking.

I was able to start walking the day of surgery and started mall walking the next day as all of us have said walk walk walk at least 30 minutes per day.

Good Luck

Started pre-op diet for keeps yesterday. 800 calories a day. I can deal with everything except the dull headache. Does anyone know what causes that.

On a lighter note, I managed to not eat the dog, not to fire anyone, and not to yell at wife.

I would love to hear pre-op diet suggestions.

Headaches are likely from either sugar or caffeine withdrawals..Hang in there it will only take 3-5 days to kick it - 800 cals seems aggressive to start - might want to go 1200, 1000, then 800 over the course of the time you have left.

I did it in stages, based on shakes as a Meal Replacement. First week, I replaced 1 meal with a shake, second week, I replaced 2 meals, third week all shakes..worked for me. I was also exercising 3 days and then 5 days a week.

Good Luck!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
