Substituting the bad stuff

Okay I'm sitting here during my lunch hour and I noticed something. I substitute alot of foods to get at least close to the same high I would get from eating the actual food.< /strong>

Let me give you an example. Right now I'm eating Yoplait Light Fat Free Yogurt, but I've added a crunched up Special K bar. This is VERY good, and it fixes my Sundae addiction (most of the time)... LOL

Also, I do eat blueberry shredded wheat. It fixes the Blueberry muffin addiction I have.

I have come up with so many place fillers for many foods. It just made me curious if anyone has come up with any other ideas on Snacks or foods that they were able to substitute for the less wise choice?

Hmmm... I really wish there was a better alternative to chips, but I haven't found one yet. No, not even SunChips which still is not that great a choice anyway...

I am starting to substitute roasted chickpeas for nuts (my addiction). So, no, they aren't the same, but for me they provide a protein-high lesser fat substitute for peanuts, almonds, walnuts,... :bored:

pizza was my weakness but I am watching my carbs and can't deal with the crust on most pizzas.

I buy lowcarb wrap bread or tortillas (whole wheat) and use them as a substitute Pizza Crust. I put on the sauce and the lowfat toppings (white meat chicken, mushrooms, fresh spinach leaves, red peppers, onion, 2% milk-cheese. It comes out sort of like a crispy extra thin crust pizza. One wrap only has 7 grams of carbs and I am only eating 1/2 or 1/3 of that. DH, who's trigycerides were getting a little high likes pizza that way too now.

I have been mixing my own trail mix as a munchy for DH and I. I mix cashews, peanuts, almonds, macadmia nuts, raisins, dried cranberries, dried tropical fruit and whole grain Life Cereal together. It is a nice healthier munchy that satisfies both sweet and salty cravings and I am satisfied on about a tbs. or two.

Wow great idea! I really love almonds but I try to avoid them because of the high fat. thanks!! :)

That really sounds delicious! I haven't had a pizza in a few months and was trying to find a better solution to it - esp. regarding the doughy crust... I don't like the wheat tortillas though, and don't mind eating the regular version of them. I don't think it would still be bad if I made that with a regular tort. Thanks!!

I think maybe just roasting them in the oven with a little salt? That would work for me - or maybe even a little seasoned salt too... OH yeah! :)

If you can find it, try Flat Out bread, original or multigrain (I don't care for the flavored versions). Most of the grocery stores in my area sell it, usually in a wire rack display near the deli case. If you are not familiar with it, here is a link to see what the package looks like. I don't know if they sell those, but they DO sell roasted soy Beans that sound very similar -- so I wouldn't be surprised if they do the chick peas that way too. Good Fiber, and pretty good for you. I haven't had them in a while (may look for some tonight when I go to the store), so I don't know how the sodium is on them.

I've tried that, and it's not bad. But I have also bought a high Fiber multi-grain tortilla too which, I think, has better nutritional info. I remember I had both in my hands and bought the tortilla one instead. I'll have to look at the package tonight to see what it was. It's NOT wheat... can't stand the wheat either. But if I remember right, it's like 9 grams of fiber.

      Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

      The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

        Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
