Question about pre-op weight loss & insurance approval

Recommended Posts

Tomorrow is my last weigh in for my 6 month supervised diet. In the beginning of my diet I gained about 10lbs and then lost the weight I put on. So 6 months later I think I'm only a few lbs less than my 6 month diet starting weight. I did however lose 60lbs on my own before I was being medically supervised, and that is reflected in my 5 year medical history. My question is will the insurance company deny my surgery because I didn't lose 10% of my 6 month starting weight? Should I do another month of dieting to try to lose more weight before submitting my paperwork to my insurance? Will they deny me because I gained weight and then lost it during the diet instead of continual weight loss?? I have BCBS of Texas...I'm really nervous about this.

I think it is more about making sure you are dedicated to having the surgery done than it is you losing weight.

Unless your insurance or surgeon required you to lose a certain amount of weight, I think you're fine.

My 6 month supervised weight loss was a roller coaster of ups and downs because a lot was going on in those 6 months (college graduation, down, went on vacation, up, started exercising, down.. etc). I was approved by Empire BCBS even though my weight was pretty much the same when I was done with my 6 month supervision.

Good luck to you.

Hi, I'm new to this board. I just completed all of the criteria for submittal to BCBS-NJ. My bariatric coordinator did not sound reassuring when she saw my 6 month "diet" visits with my primary care physician. Please help me with positive thoughts that I get approved by insurance. All paperwork was faxed yesterday 7/7/09. Just waiting for an answer.

Thanks,

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
