Wow, just saw what NYU charged my insurance co!

Recommended Posts

I had surgery earlier this month and just looked on-line on my insurance company website to check my claims. Shocking! 52K for my surgery and one night stay at NYU!

It surely makes the 6 month wait, etc. all worthwhile, as I have not even put out a penny.

I am grateful for this, but shocked, as I thought it was more in the 15k range.

I reviewed my online claims. The bill for the hospital - outpatient, no overnight stay - was $29k. The surgeon's bill was $5k and the assistant surgeon another $950. Thank goodness for insurance. The claims haven't been processes completely so I don't know what my portion will be but I don't expect much.

I agree my bills have been staggering. Hospital 27,000, Surgeon 9,000, his nurse practitioner 2,500., Stress test 5,500. Thank God I have Insurance, and work at the facility where I was banded, they remove my portion of the bill. I was shocked at the cost, and wonder how self pay persons handle all these bills.

I had a similar experience a few weeks ago. My insurance company was charged, and paid, $20,400 for the band itself, out of a total of about $43,000. It was listed as "prosthetic" and was considered reasonable and customary by Empire Blue Cross. The bill does not include the surgeon or anesthesiologist, who bill separately.

I was very lucky, my total out of pocket was less than $100.

My surgery was almost 28k for just the surgeon and the outpatient services. If I had chosen to stay overnight my insurance would of been billed 36k. The testing over the 6 months and the anasteisiologist was seperate... Those equaled 3820. So the final bill for my insurance was 31820 since I didn't stay the night.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
