Calling All MARCH '09 Bandsters - We need a name!

Recommended Posts

Hello all!

I'm just a few days off from surgery on 3/3. Has anyone experienced sadness about this whole thing. I guess I'm sad that I'm addicted to food and have to resort to surgery. I am also sad that I didn't have this done a long time ago, what a waste, so many diets, so much misery when you gain it back. I'm not saying that I regret this step it just makes me look back at all the time and effort put into weight loss over the years. Well, I do truly think this is the correct answer, it is the right tool for me. Guess there are all sort of emotions that come up. Anyone else feeling this way?

Hi Miss Cheryl, just read your post, i am feeling exactly the same i am getting band fitted 6/3 starting to feel really sorry for myself i miss having goodies so much i think i am addicted to choc, like you feel even embarrassed about having surgery, keep thinking something going to go wrong for me,deep down i know it is the right decision for me its an emotional roll a coaster at the mo i suppose its only natural, but this time next week it will be all over for both of us we be wondering why we got so worried and have a new life to look forward to god bless for your op, look forward to hearing how you got on lol x:smile:

I know I don't go until the 8th but there are alot of us getting banded this week and I know we are all tired and hungry, but we should mostly be so excited to be starting this journey....together!

I have gotten so much support from you all so far and I can't wait until we are all over this hump and can start really living our best lives!

I am also a LUCKY LOOSER, surgery date is 3/6/09...I am really scared, I haven't been very good with my 2 week pre-op diet...I didn't see that it was that big of a deal, until I was reading some of comments...I hope my lack of concern does not change my date. I am having it out of town and had to make hotel reservations.

Got my surgery date for 3/13/09. Yes it is Friday the 13th. I think this will be one of the luckiest days of my life. I am scared and excited at the same time.

I am also having my surgery 3/13/09. I am like you kind of excited to be having it on friday the 13th. I am not in anyway scared of the date but I am scared to death in general. Am I the only one who feels this way. I think I am most scared that I am going to fail. And failure is just not an option.

Counting down to the 9th, I have not found the pre-op diet to be to bad. Mine is not all liquid and I haven't been hungry. I find that I do have some texture issues I didn't know about. If nothing rubs the roof of my mouth I'm not sure I've eaten. I have been pulling back from the food for about 2 months so I am doing OK for now. I really do wish I had eaten that Prime Rib like I wanted to last week before I started the pre-op. Oh well, I really want t be under 220 before the 6th, so I'll just keep pushing for that.

Wow.....only three days away for me. My wife was asking me the other night if I was excited or scared and I was trying to explain to her that I was neither. I think both MissCheryl and Shoes did a great job explaining how I feel. More sad that it has came to this point, embarrased that others will find out and nervous about how my life will change. I know I will probably have to spill the Beans at some point but when and where is the question. This month alone is my birthday, a poker party and a golf trip (all of whick typically include copius amounts of alcohaul and food). So now I have to decide how to deal with these social situation where I will obviously be acting "differently". With all that being said, I am excited and can't wait for the big day!!!!!!

What are you liquid dieters drinking?

Today is my first day on liquids, I'm being banded on March 9th, one week from today. I had a Protein shake for Breakfast, then had some Soup for lunch - it was broccoli and cheddar which I ran thru the Magic Bullet to get the lumps out. Now I just had some low fat cottage cheese which I also de-lumped. Do you have a calorie cap to stay under? I don't think I do.

You're right, we're all in this together and need to support each other and cheer each other on. I started liquids today and I'm not hungry, I must have had too much. How is it that you're having your surgery on a Sunday?

My surgery day is wednesday the 4th and i am very nervous! I have never had surgery before and that is what is really scary for me.. I have been doing really good on the pre op diet, it was really hard at first but by day 4 it was a piece of cake. I am excited about losing some of this extra weight and start feeling healthy! I hope everyone has lots of success with their surgery.

Go Team MArch 2009!:)

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

We have to remember that everyone moves at their own pace. For some it may be harder to adjust, people may have other factors at play that feed into the unhealthy relationship with food e.g. eating disorders, trauma. I'd hope those who you are referring to address this outside of this forum, with a professional.

This is a place to feel safe to vent, seek advice, hopefully without judgement.

Compassion goes a long way :)

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
