Hey, I was just wondering if coughing hurts the band? What I mean is almost every year I get bronchitis (no I don't smoke)and it causes me to cough a lot. also what happens if you get the flu or a stomach bug and throw up a lot will that cause band slippage? I never get the flu but my luck I will after I get the band. lolo.

I have not heard of coughing hurting the band. But vomiting can hurt the band.

I don't know about the flu but I had the stomach virus and from the vomiting it irritated my band and caused some swelling. I didn't know it at the time and I ate a piece of ham and didn't chew to well and it got lodged in my band. (extremely scary). I took 2 1/2 hrs before it finely losened up and passed. That caused more swelling and had to go to doctor to have some fill removed for a few days.

My advice is if you get the stomach flu, just do liquids or soft mushy foods for a few days to aloow any swelling to go down.

I asked my doctor about this and he said that it should be fine if we vomit with a stomach bug. He said usually these bugs are quick and you wouldn't be throwing up long enough to damage the band. Of course, he said there is always a risk when you vomit and if we ever have any doubt, to call him. Honestly, if we get a stomach bug, we probably shouldn't worry because we can't do anything about the stomach bug. Just be aware of any feelings you have from the band that are unusual and call the doctor.

i've not heard of coughing causing any problems - but vomiting can. my dr has his patients keep a script of phenegran on hand for just that purpose.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
