Is anyone else having or had trouble the first week with protien?

Recommended Posts

I was banded on the 23rd and I recieved a lot of ideas from everyone on how to get this excess gas out and I'm doing a lot better. I've been walking around more too.

I tried to start a protien shake today, but got only 3 sips down before it upset my tummy. It seems the only thing that I can stomach is crystal light and chicken broth. Did anyone else have this problem? How did you get your protien in?

Also, since I expelled a lot of the lower gas pockets I feel the pain of the incisions more and if I sigh or take in a deep breath, I think I'm feeling the band on my stomach. Is this just my imagination and might be due to a gas pocket?

So, many questions, I know.

I was banded on the 22nd and was told by the nutritionist not to worry about the Protein for the first week, she said that it makes alot of people nauseaous. I did email her to find out if I should start taking my Vitamins and Calcium, the thought makes me a bit gaggy. Maybe you should give your dr. or nutritionist a call re the protein.

I was banded 1/19.

Right now, I don't get all my protien yet. The goal is over 50 grams per day, but as I read my manual more, at that first week they only wanted you to get 1 shake to start with and then build to more.

It was day 3 before I could do a full single shake. When I did, it made that gas worse. I am still not to the full 50/day yet, so I think you are fine.

For now, I would focus on fluids. Focus on getting at least 32oz of Fluid for a mini goal.

It is true, what they say. It gets better every day. For me day 5 was a really turning point in how I felt personally.

Better days to come, I promise.

The first 2 weeks or so, swelling in your esophagus causes its own restriction and daily it goes away. Some people take up to 4 weeks for it to feel normal.

At that point you wont have any problem with eating anything but stick to the routine of small amounts. I personally had slimming shakes with added Protein powder once i could stomach them.

I have had no problems at all with protien, i was blending things like prawns/crab with a small amount of low fat mayo and ketchup/tomatoe puree once i was on mushy foods stage. I also supplemented meals with the shakes with protien. I had root vegatable mash, stews and the like. My doctor checked my blood etc and all was fine.

I have so far had no adverse effects to any food, but have not ate much bread att all. I tend to lean towards wraps or unlevend bread if there is no alternative on a menu when im out. I did try toast which was fine, but have not really had any since.

I had the very same issue and it is gas and all i can say is one day it will have gone. Mine took 2 weeks, some people 5 days. My port area had pain some intense pain on occasions for up to 12 weeks after the OP and there was no problems with it. It was just me i kept clumsily turning over in bed causing it to pull on my sutures.

I've been very lucky - my only real post-op problem has been hunger! I was banded 1/19 and three days out I was so hungry I could eat a horse! I've been getting all my Protein and most of my Water in, but have been breaking over on calories. Yesterday was my best day, with very little hunger and only 820 calories. I go back to work today so we'll see what happens ...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
