Been banded just at a year (almost) and have had reflux once...when I went to bed too soon after dinner. Otherwise, no, thank goodness!

I am about a year and a half out and I didnt develop reflux symptoms until my last fill in Feb this year. BUT as long as I take OTC prilosec everyday I dont have any probs but as soon as I forget it comes back. I'm hoping with time it will go away. Doc says we'll see how its doing in september!

I had mild reflux prior to my surgery on 10-10-08. After the surgery my reflux went into over-drive. My reflux was in my throat, not my chest. I NEVER had heartburn. My voice was hoarse for almost 3 months. In the cold winter months the cold air made it almost painful to take a deep breath outside. Nexium didn't work but Kapidex and a liquid (I forgot the name) did the trick. After 9 months I didn't ask for a fill because I lost alot of weight and was fearfull of reflux coming back. Last week I went to my Dr. and he wouldn't give me a fill. I guess its a good thing. Up until now, I lost 96 lbs. in the first 16 weeks and 20 more in the next 5 months. I guess this is where I have to stop depending on the band and learn to really eat properly. GOOD LUCK TO ALL OF US.

I have had the band for close to 4 years..had NO problems with acid reflux till a year or so ago...i was throwing up up to 10 times a night....after many tests, etc my doc figured out i had a hiatal hernia....i go in for surgery in a week to have that fixed as well as to replace my band (he thinks my old band may be part of the problem too) I had a complete unfill about 6 months ago and have gained 15 lbs due to that so am really looking forward to getting the surgery and getting back to normal!! if you are having problems don't wait go to your doc and get it checked out..there is no reason to be in pain for as long as i was!!

Why do they have to replace the band. I thought they were in for good. Also, I NEVER wait to see my surgeon or Gastro if need be. The meds I am on are keeping the reflux in check.

I had it infrequently pre op. Usually if I had coffee at a specific restaurant. My surgery revealed a hernia which was repaired July 29/09. Now I have a bit of reflux almost every day. It started with me waking up in the morning. Now I'm taking gaviscon daily. When I wake up and when I go to sleep. I see the doc tomorrow for a fill, so will talk to them then.

Glad to hear I"m not the only one.

Thanx

I was banded Mar 2008 - for the past several months I've had acid reflux so bad - now on prevacid, but, still have it, but, not to the extreme it was _ I also just learned I have heital hernia, does that help trigger it? I'm also miserable - lost 150lbs - started at 333lbs - and weight loss is terrific, but, far too much, I look sickly - I'm a man 6'4" and now have a 32 inch waist and 180lb - my goal was 220lb, doc's goal 200 lb -he loosened band by 2cc and still I can't eat - everyone is asking if I'm sick - I'm miserable!!!

your hernia is probably new. when they do the surgery they always check for that first. my reflux kicked into over-drive after the surgery. i take kapidex and a prescription luquid and i feel good from it. mayby your dr. should deflate the band totally and start back up slowly.

I have acid reflux to the extreme. I never had it prior to surgery and didn't have it until the last fill. After this last fill I can hardly lie down without getting sick and I have chest problems and coughing. I didn't have enough restriction before this fill and now I have enough, but not too much (as far as food intake goes). Does anyone have a suggestion on what you can do to prevent it at night. I've been taking Nexium and it helps, but if you stop eating or drinking before bedtime will that help? My nose is also all messed up. I have sores in my nose. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I take a over the counter Prilosec (its long acting meansing it shoudl last 24 hours) before dinner EVERYDAY it prevents my nighttime reflux and sometimes I have reflux in the morning or after lunch so I take a generic zantac if needed my doc says thats fine if it keeps the reflux away...it works wonderfully.

Maybe your band might be to tight. I know from past experience I had reflux problems and I was taking the same over the counter medicine it help me a lot. My Band was to tight, I had a little Fluid taken out and started eating Protein first, solid food, food of substance then vegetables, fruit and starches last. I found I got fuller much faster and not eating late at night, my reflux problems went away. :)

You sound much too tight and probably need at least a small unfill at a minimum. Usually a small unfill will correct the issue completely.

On the other side of the coin, if you stay too tight for too long, you risk a slip and the loss of your band. Have you talked to your band doctor about it?

Hi,

I think your to tight, I know you probably don't want a little taken out of your band, but you should try it and see if you get better. I never had reflux before I was banded and when I had my fill that I thought was just right I started having the reflux at night when I laid down, trying sleeping up in bed, tried taking over the counter medicine, tried eating earlier, nothing worked. I ended up with a slip, went in couldn't be fix also with a herenia too......... Don't let this happen to you, I loved the band, the heart burn is not good for you. Are you eating food with substance?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
