did you have a coordinator? if so who was it? I have gotten letters from a few people and I'm not sure if I should use one or not. Will it really help? Ayways any input from anyone would be great. Thanks

We booked at the OCC and did not use a coordinator. I don't know if it would have been any easier with one. I thought it was a pretty straight forward process.

I also went to the OCC, and communicated a lot with the patient care coordinator there prior to my surgery. I had a gazillian questions and it was nice to be able to call her up anytime and ask them as they came to mind.

I went straight through with the Doctor's website (Dr. Alberto Aceves, Mexicali) He has girls in the office that could answer any question I had. Can't imagine what a coordinator might do, except be a middle man that takes a cut (IMHO).

I was banded in mexico on Jan 30,09.I was going to give a big cut to a facillitator but realized they werent even going to be there when I went I bi passed all that saved alot of money and still got great care. I can't imagine what she would have done for me for the amount I was going to pay her. I recomend it if you have no support at all..

I was banded in Mexico with Dr. Kuri. I had a facilitator. She has called me several times since being home and emailed. She also helped answer some of my questions before the surgery. I have also contacted her, instead of the office (as I thought it would be quicker and easier), regarding what my first fill should be.

All in all, a facilitator has helped me on this journey.

I'm very happy with them. They've done something like 6 or 7 thousand surgeries, and it shows.

Hello!

I am considering Dr.Ortiz. Can you tell me how much it cost to get it done there? I am from Calgary so I would have to fly down. Did you need to get a hotel?

Thanks !

Cost was around $8,000 US plus airfare. Most TJ clinics include transportation to/from the airport and the hotel room for two nights. You would overnight at the clinic but your companion (if you bring one) would stay at the hotel. You would stay the second night at the hotel.

When are you thinking of going? We are going down for our fills in March, maybe we'll see you there.

It was 7950USD which included pickup and drop off to San Diego airport, first night hotel stay, second night stay at clinic, and third night hotel stay. As Cujo mentioned, if you go with someone, they can stay at the hotel on the second night when you are at the clinic. The cost does not include the flight to get down to san diego.

Hi! This is my first time on here, I'm just getting my account sorted out. I have a date for surgery on March 17 09 with Dr.Ortiz. I am a bit concerned with what I am hearing about gang war violence in Tijuana right now...does anyone have any comments about that?

The clinic and hotel are in the best area of TJ and should be safe. I was told the violence is more in the south end of the city. Like Calgary, there are parts of the city you should not walk alone at night in, but, like any city, there are 'good' parts where its reasonably safe.

I would stay close to the clinic and hotel if I was going down now and skip the revolution avenue tourist area. I would take the clinic's transport only and not a taxi. Stuff like that.

Good luck with the surgery.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
