The Band and Acid Reflux

Recommended Posts

Last week I had my first visit with my surgeon and he told me that he would not do the lap band if I have acid reflux.:w00t:

Which I am not sure I have, I get heartburn once or twice a week.

Has anyone else had this problem or more problems with acid reflux after banding?

Thanks

Hi:

I had alot of acid reflux prior to surgery. When they did the surgery they repaired a hiatal hernia. This was causing my reflux.

After surgery I hardly ever have heartburn. If my band is a bit too tight I can get heartburn, but then I get slighly unfilled and it goes away.

You might want to find a different surgeon if you really want to get banded.

Best wishes to you.

Sue

My husband has the reflux and he is going to be banded.

I would suggest finding a different surgeon.

My H also has a repaired hiatal hernia and the Dr says it wont be a problem.

I had bad acid reflux before surgery and took Nexium twice a day. Now I just take Nexium once a day and i'm not sure that I need that anymore. Are there any other surgeon's in your area that you could see or maybe just talk to you current surgeon about why he won't do it?

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
