When did you have to pay?

Recommended Posts

The hospital where I had my surgery demanded my out of pocket up front the day of surgery ($1000). I got a call from the hospital a few days before my surgery was scheduled and they went over my portion at that time. Actually they wanted me to give them $1250 b/c I have a $250 deductable, but I had already paid medical bills outta pocket for the yr. I just took all the receipts for what I had already paid and they deducted that from my outta pocket. I ended up writting a ck to the hospital fot about $850. My biggest concern is that my insurance co has a cap of i think $25,000 that they will pay for bariatric services (lifetime if I remember right). The hospital told me the "negotiated rate" for my surgery was $14,000 (I think that is a load of crap) so I'm expecting the insurance co to cover all the rest of my costs, but I'm worried that it'll all be on me if i have any problems in the future.

Lilith, you could always call the hospital directly and as what they will be charging you.

Thanks for the info! At this point I don't think I care what I have to pay AFTER, lol - I just wish they would tell me what I have to pay before...... the 23rd is too close to stock pile money, I guess I should have been saving for it but I don't think I actually realized I had to payout upfront.

I think that if you do have something to pay at the time of surgery they send you a notice prior. I received my letter about 3 weeks prior to my pre op appointment and it was due at pre op (cash or credit card).

I think if you havent heard you will not have to pay until after. IMO

No kidding! All my pre-ops were either $5 or NO co-pays and surgery was $15. All my first year after care visits/fills are free. Good think hubby loves his job because I love the benefits! I don't know if I could've done this without our awesome insurance.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
