Hello All, after reading this forum for a little over a year I finally decided to join! I am so glad I did :scared2:

I have a question, I should probably know this. But I got so caught up in taking all the tests needed I forgot to think about all the things that happen after the surgery.

Mainly I was wondering how you get a fill....and does it hurt?

I am scheduled to see my doctor on Feb. 4th to schedule my surgery. I will ask then but just wanted to see what my lap band friends had to say.

Hi Jamie, and welcome to LBT.

To answer your question, a fill is done by needle into your port. It sounds bad, but for me, it's been less than nothing. I've had five, and the worse pain has been pulling off the bandage later. I don't even get a bandage anymore, because I've never bled.

Good luck with your surgery.

Jamie, I also have had no pain with either of my fills. I suggest NOT looking at the needle though. Just look at the ceiling.:scared2:

Hi Jamie05: I have had three fills, of which two were at the doctors office. My doctor utilizes a small needle with a numbing agent and injects that into my stomach. I feel a slight pin prick. No pain.

Then she has me do a sit up/stomach crunch while I lay on the table. She pats my stomach and locates the port. She then inserts the fill needle into my stomach and connects to the port. I never see the needle, not do I want to see the needle.

Anyway, my doctor takes out the old fill to see what is left from the previous fills. After she measures that amount, she pushes that fill back in and adds more. I never feel any pain. I never have any bruising, and I am not sore afterwards. But again, I have only had two office fills.

As far as the fills, I get great restriction for a couple of weeks and then it fades. I have never had a problem after the fill and I have never had food or Fluid stuck.

I have a 10cc band, which now has 5cc.

Hope the information helps.

The amount of Fluid in the syringe is measured in ccs.

Thank you all so much for your quick responces. I appreciate the feed back. And I am now at ease knowing that the needle doesnt hurt. It was kind of freaking me out.

But the closer I get to the surgery the more questions I get,

thanks for being so nice!

Hi Jamie. I've had 3 fills and no problems with any of them. They make me lay down with and do a kind of crunch. They put the needle in my port, put some Fluid in, and then have me walk over to the machine - needle still in me - sounds gross, but it doesn't hurt. I drink the liquid while we watch it go down on the x-ray type machine. If it goes down too quickly, they add more fluid. On my last fill, it wasn't going down, so they took a tiny bit out. I had no restriction after surgery - none after my first fill - none after my second fill..... but the third fill has given me PLENTY of restriction. I now have 5.9 cc's in my 10 cc band. I love my band and my fills have been easy. Good luck to you. Keep coming here with your questions and concerns. It is a great place with lots of nice people who are here to help you out and give you plenty of support!! Becky

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
