I had my surgery on Monday, January 12th and I feel good for the most part with one exception. If I do too much walking I have a sharp pain in both of my sides and not necessarily at the same time - kind of like a runners cramp but worse. When I stop and think about it, it seems like it's about the position of the port on one side and about where the band is located on the other side.

Has anyone else experienced these pains? I'm wondering if it's because I'm internally bruised or if it's just gas rolling around in there. How long will it be before there is no pain/discomfort?

Also, I was wondering if anyone else has experienced a popping noise from the site of their port. Day 4 after surgery I was laying down in bed and tried moving from my back to my left side and I heard a "pop" sound. It didn't hurt at all and it reminded me of a bubble wrap "pop" sound. I called the doctors office the next day and talked to the nurse who didn't seem real concerned/alarmed. She said she wrote it on my chart and to be sure to mention it to the doctor at my follow-up appointment on the 28th of January.

Kim, I was banded 1/5/09. I also get a sharp pain when I walk to much. I think the pain is coming from where my port is. The port is stitched into stomache muscles and I guess it is just the muscles being pulled. I also get pain if I stand to long too. From what I hear it takes about 4 weeks for it to completly (sp) heal. I hope anyway!!

I know thats where my port is and try to tell myself that it will take time to heal...am i correct???? I really seems to be getting worse...but of course I am now on tylenol and not narcotics...lol....feels better when I stand...and I have had no nausea... I was able to start eating mushies thursday and it seems to have gotten worse since then!!!!! any suggestions??? Is this common???

I too was banded on 1/12/2009. Initially I thought that my left side was being ripped right out of me with any muscle movement. I also had the gall bladder taken out when banded. so I too have discomfort in the back and right side as well. I have to say that today for the first time, I am feeling pretty good and not much pain unless bending over or tight clothes around the waist.. I also called the doctor to inquire about it and was told that the port is attached to the abdominal wall and that it will take each person a different time as to the healing processes.. I was told to give it 2 - 3 weeks for it to be pretty much pain free..

On another note.. I want a ticker factory on my signature. I have created it but can't seem to get it on the url with a copy and paste. I also typed it in and tried to upload it. I continue to get file error.. any suggestions?:w00t:

I was banded March 2007. For many months now I develop pain around my port site at night -- especially when I have been sitting a lot. If I stand or exercise the pain is relieved. Attending to my sitting posture provides a modicum of relief (if I am on deadline and have no option but to be seated). And it is relieved when I lie down, so I enjoy many nights early-to-bed. It's not excruciating pain -- more like tugging than sharp or electric pain -- but I surely don't enjoy it. Again, I believe it is associated with the port being attached to the abdominal muscles. I wish I knew a way to permanently alleviate this without losing my band, but if I have to choose -- I'll keep the band.

You know as I was reading I questioned why someone would be banded for several years and then have the gastric bypass surgery done. The person indicated that the band got them where they were headed the surgery keeps them there. I wonder are there others that do it as well? Has anyone had their band say more than 10 years? Does it wear out and have to be replaced? I hear of erosion but there are also other circumstances that cause it.. Does it just wear out and is there any one out there that has had it happen?

Just wondering what the future holds beyond all the efforts and the glory...

As for durability, I know one person who has had their band 9 years and still VERY happy with it. I don't know of anyone whose band has just "worn out."

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
