Sleep apnea question

Recommended Posts

Hi Gang- I have been diagnosed with sleep apnea and I am on the cpap machine. I want to understand exactly how this will affect my surgery so please correct the following thoughts...

My understanding is that I stop breathing at times when I sleep, quite often, actually- so, the machine keeps my airways open- should I stop during my surgery, that will be taken care of by the vent down my throat- when I come out of surgery, the cpap machine will assist me breathing should I have problems at that time.. such as what??? slow/irregular breathing from anesthesia still in my system whether I'm awake OR asleep.. is this correct? Thanks for you help.. this makes me nervous!!!

I have sleep apnea also. I didn't have any issues. The hospital did ask me to bring my own cpap machine so if they needed it in the recovery room they would have one set to my needs. I did not need to use it though.

I hope that with my weight loss that I will not have to use it much longer. I have lost 60 lbs and have 65 more pounds to go.

Good luck with your surgery.

I too have the cpap machine and just had my surgery on 01/14/2009 ,everything went fine . I was told to bring it with me to the hospital (just in case) ,but did not use it till I came home and went to bed that night . You are going to be in good hands ,so please try not to stress too much .I know it's hard . I send you Best Wishes for a great recovery .

They ask you bring it with you in case you have to spend the night. You can leave it in the car.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
