Not hungry on post op liquids, afraid to move to mushies!

Recommended Posts

Not sure if this makes sense, but, I have had no, absolutely no hunger since my surgery on 1/12. I force myself to have shakes and try to have Soup, to get some nutrition. In two days I begin the 'mushies' and am worried that perhaps adding things I like and different flavors, will activate my hunger!

I know I can't stay on liquids forever, but..if I am happy on it, will it be bad to not move forward?

Anyone else experience this, and also experience the fear of adding foods?

I just had my surgery on Friday January 16 and am on full liquids. I am also not hungry and am having to really push myself to drink liquids period. I worry about moving onto mushies but think that if I do move on and I am not hungry that maybe it will stay that way and will only need a few bites to satisfy myself. It is a great relief to finally not feel like I am hungry all the time!!

I was band on the 8th of January. I am on the mushies and getting ready to move on to soft foods. I can tell you that I am still not hungry and I still need to force myself to eat. I don't eat a lot but I do eat some. I am very lucky to eat maybe a cup of food all day long.

Jan 14th for me and I'm doing three CIB with added Protein a day--lots of other good liquids and really not hungry at all. Every time my stomach makes noise I think it's hunger, but it's just rearranging the contents! No hunger at all.

I'm both looking forward to the possiblity of chewing something more challenging then Jell-o and also scared to move onto mushies as well.

I haven't felt at all sick or anything funny at all--not even any more flatulent (isn't that a nice word) that I was before.

A baked potato sounds nice, it'll be good to use a fork:smile2:

Hi, I was also banded on Monday, and had the same fear...and for good reason! I started on mushies on Sunday night, 1/18, and have been eating like a pig. I ran out and got hummus, guacamole, ate homemade chunky spaghetti sauce, sucked the filling out of two deviled eggs, and have eating cream Soups. (Not all at one time.) I am very hungry today, and was not before. So proceed with caution! Do the liquid diet as long as you can!

I was banded on 1/14 and have not felt the slightest bit hungry at all. My doctor allowed me to start adding foods to my diet beginning on 1/18. Today I was allowed to begin well cooked veggies, veggie soup, mashed potatoes, etc. Well, even with eating the mushies, I'm having to force myself to eat. I'm only getting in about 400 calories per day and I'm up to about 30 oz of liquids per day (I'm really trying hard to get it all in and I just can't). In the morning I feel very nauseous and the thought of eating is just horrible. I am barely able to drink my Water. Later in the day, I eat about 4-5 bites of something like smooshed up peas or drink a couple drinks of soup and I'm full. It took me 2 hours to eat a banana today. I feel like I'll throw up if I eat more. It's not painful like I'm stuck. I'm just full and I have that "I just overate feeling". I don't know if I'm just swollen from surgery still or if it is because he said he put a 10cc band on and it was pretty snug. It just seems weird to me....

Wow, your really lucky yo have such great restriction that you are not hungry yet. I had 3cc placed in my band during my surgery and around day 7-post op, I was hungryyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy. I wanted to eat real food.

I did not have a fear of adding foods. I was so ready for real food, but I did have a fear of over eating. I use to have huge portions for my meals, plus I would snack all day long before the band. My biggest fear was that I would continue to do that. But my reality is my band does not allow me to do that. I get full rather quickly with small portions.

Just follow your doctor's orders and gradually add mushies. I think you will find that you can only eat so much.

Good luck

I am SO jealous! I wonder why every doctor is different, interesting. In any event, I am following my Dr's diet to the T. For weeks 1-2 liquid-soft pureed foods only. Weeks 2-4 soft foods/mushies, 5 weeks regular food.< /p>

Problem is, I am HUNGRY! I've had a yogurt couple bites of popsicles, and a few bites of mashed potatoes, but am still hungry. I've been drinking my Protein Shakes almost constantly to get my 60grams of Protein. I will look forward to the day when I can eat a piece of turkey and put away the shakes!

I had surgery on 1/16 and according to my Dr am supposed to move on to mushy foods tomorrow. I have absolutely no appetite what so ever. I haven't felt one hunger pain at all. I'm super nervous to move onto mushy foods, also but I also know it's important to follow the instructions my Dr gave me. Good luck to us all!

I was banded on Jan 15th and have no hunger pains whatsoever. I feel like Im in the same boat with most of you guys. I started mushies yesterday. While I wasnt hungry, I was craving to chew or just get off liquids..... I had scrambled eggs for Breakfast and tuna fish for late lunch but thats all I could tolerate. Anyways, I know how your feeling. I am just trying to stick with what he told me. I dont think its how much you eat right now its just started it and seeing how we can tolerate things. I tolerated it fine. Just taking it day by day.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
