I was wondering if any of you drove right after surgery? I mean like getting out of the hospital and driving right then. Is this ok?

I have a very supportive family most of the time but for some reason I cant get anyone who can come with me for my surgery which is 2 hours away from me. I was thinking that I might stay the night in the town and then drive the 2 hours the next day to get home.

Is this an ok idea or just a bad idea? :)

I was told defintely no driving for alittle while, especially right after surgery. The doctor said given the surgery my muscles wouldn't have the same reaction time. Maybe you could take a bus or something like that or offer to pay a friend gas money to drive you. Just a thought. Good luck with your surgery and take care.

I had asked my doctor the same thing and he said that I needed to have someone drive me home. I was banded on Friday, stayed overnight at the hospital, and would never have been able to drive myself home on Saturday. In fact, I felt like I was barely surviving the ride home with my mother driving! lol :)

Do you have any good friends that would go with you. Maybe you can get a room for them and you can stay at the hospital or with them at the hotel. I know when I talked to my friends, they came out of the woodwork to help me, but my family stepped up to the plate too.

HI! I really hope you can find someone to drive you.....Personally I dont think its a good idea. Just going on drives after the surgery was kinda rough depending on the road. And Im 6th day post op and still dont feel like Im 100% ready to drive! If you didnt have to drive very far and you were staying the night in the hospital, then maybe, but you're talking about a 2 hour drive:( Good Luck, I really hope someone can give you a helping hand:smile:

There's no way I could have driven right after surgery. First of all, the hospital would not have released me if I didn't have someone to drive me home. Second, I was still heavily under the influence of anesthesia, and kept dozing off. Third, I did have some pain, and was moving pretty slow; I'm sure my with the combination of pain and anesthesia my reflexes were not up to speed.

My surgeon would have cancelled my surgery if I didn't have someone to drive me home. I had surgery on Friday, and didn't drive again until Monday. Even then it was only 8 blocks to my office. There is no way I could have driven the 2 hours home from the surgery center by myself. They doped me up for the ride home!

I hope you can get a ride home - there was no possible way I would have made home in one piece - Quite frankly had I driven myself home I would have probably had an accident and or hurt someone!

Good luck and I hope someone comes and gets you.

Hi ladies,

So what day did you feel able to drive? I will have to take my children to and from school, about a ten minute drive and I am planning on doing this 2 days after surgery. Will this be too soon?

Thank you all so much for your replies. Surprisingly everyone agreed that it is a bad idea for me to drive myself.

I will make sure I find someone to drive me and if I cant then I will be getting a very expensive bus ride there and back.

Hi Babbs!

Why did you have a port revision???

Hello Elyssia :)

I had to have a port revision because my port was too large for my body, it was bonking against my ribs (it is on the right side between my ribs and hip bone) being short that I am 5ft2 - it was causing constant pain, sleeping was painful, sitting was painful - pretty unhappy all the time.

So that being said I had a "low profile" port put in, slightly lower than where the other one was. It is smaller and thinner and has made all the difference!

It was an easy and quick surgery as well :wink5:

Bad idea....you will be under general anesthesia which stays in your system for up to 24 hours. If you drove, you would be just the same as drinking and driving and you could have an accident and hurt yourself or others. If you got pulled over, you could be arrested for DUI. My doctors would not release me unless I had an adult to take me home and I only lived 5 minutes from the hospital (if that). Surely, there HAS to be someone who can take you!

Thanks everyone for the advice. You were right, there was no way I could have drove yesterday. I could barely keep my eyes open. My mom ended up coming down to be with me so its all good.

Thanks again!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
