Post op diet from my Dr.

Recommended Posts

I was banded on Wed 1/7/09 and was seen for my first post op appointment on Tues 1/13/09. The Dr. stated that I should continue full liquids for five days than progress to soft foods for five days and if I tolerate the soft foods than move on to a regular diet. This is different from the materials that they provided on the post op diet. Has anyone followed something similiar?

Hi Aries - Yes, my Dr, has me on full liquids, I go for my first post-op appt this coming Wednesday. I will then go on soft/mushies for a week, then regular food. :) I was surprised too, I thought I be on Clear Liquids for a week then full liquids, puree, soft, then regular. I must say at this point, I'm glad l will be eating something soon, even if it is a "mushy"! :wink2: Take Care!

My post op diet was similar but different...however you're safe to do as your doc orders! The post op diet is for healing more than weight loss (or nutrition, for that matter...) Point is to keep you hydrated and let your band and port sites heal. So if the surgeon, who knows your "innards" (LOL) says you can have full liquids and then soft food, I'd trust him! And LUCKY you! :)

Aries: You are lucky. I did not get solids until week four post-op. Just follow your doctors instructions and you will be fine!

Congrats on your surgery. It's a great way to start the New Year!

I had clear fluids for 2 days, chicken and beef natural stock, then normal fluids (actually used the Optifast as I felt it had all the nutrients needed) did not drink anything high calory or high carbohydrate... after a week on that, went onto mushies.. soft scrambled eggs / baby food.. and then went on 'softer solids' if you like for about a week and then into normal food, but ensuring it was never dry, always moist.. and still do that now. I have not eaten bread since before the operation, nor Pasta, and had a tablespoon of rice the other day with curry.. all OK... But it sort of follows your doctors advice.. Cheers and Good Luck

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
