My current dilema...

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone!

So, here is my dilema - I m two days post-op and i am having trouble determining what I am feeling. I can't tell if I am uncomfortbale from the gas/pressure, from drinking/"eating" too much, or if they are hnger pains!

How do you suggest I determine which it is? I don't want to keep drinking, as if they are hunger pains, but I am way down on my intake comapred to what the doctor's said I "should" have drank today so if it is just hunger, I want to drink more!

lol - sorry for the rant, but this is the first time I have felt so uncomfortbae with no relief from drugs, walking, or food/drink.

Any thoughts on how to tell the difference??

I had the same problem but I just associated them with gas. I couldnt eat very much after my surgery so I knew it wasnt hunger.

I to had the same thing. I thought mine was hunger pains more than gas. My belly still makes the noises, so I call my belly two angry tigers fighting.

Ha ha ha! I know what you mean! I'm staying with some friends until I feel well enough to get around on my own and we were watching tv last night and then my friend turned to me and was like, "I heard that from over here". The noises are soooo loud sometimes.

As for the pain/hunger/gas pain, I chalked it up to gas pains most of the time. I knew when I was actually hurting, because there is no mistaking the port pain. give it a couple more days and you'll be able to tell. I can eat a portion of sugar free Jello and that'll fill me right up if i'm not sure if i'm hungry or not. It's 5 calories and not a bad way to test the waters, if you know what I mean.:scared2:

Okay, here's my take. YMMV (Your mileage may vary.) A great deal of identifying what the pain is directly related to where the pain is. Bear with me, here.

1. Belly rumbles below the level of the stomach. You can safely ignore those. They're your lower intestine doing its thing. The noise will cease later.

2. Pain around the port site. That's just plain old healing. Take your pain meds.

3. Discomfort in the lower chest-- hunger OR you ate something that can't pass the stoma easily.

Disclaimer: This is how I interpret my own body. Yours may be different.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
