getting enough fluids

Recommended Posts

I was banded this past Monday and besides the Protein shakes--which I can get most of it down--I cannot seem to get more than three to four cups of Fluid down. And this seems to take almost a whole day. Looking for any input or advise.

What did your doctor say about hydration? I didn't have any trouble drinking (many don't any more, I've read, with the newer lap bands) but he did stress we were to stay hydrated. He also told us no Protein during the 1st week. We're all different.

for the first two weeks I am to continue the Protein Shakes three times a day along with clear broth, crystal lite, Water, tea or other Clear Liquids. they would like me to get about 8 cups of Fluid in and I can't seem to do it.

Ok did you call and tell them you can't? Because you know if you don't take in enough liquid you can get dehydrated. Are you still urinating? Is it clear or concentrated?

seems concentrated to me. I have an appointment with the doctor on Tuesday. Should I be calling before then?

I'm not a doctor, ok? But you can become dehydrated VERY fast. How much Fluid are you getting in? I'd hate to encourage you to go to the ER if this isn't really an emergency but by the same token, once you get dehydrated things start to dive pretty fast. If your doc has a 24-hour number you might should call it and let them know average how many ounces you're getting in, how much you're urinating. They can decide if you need to be seen right away. I don't mean to alarm you but if this has gone on since Monday and you really are getting a little bit down, you may need IV fluids.

AGAIN..I'm not a doc. I don't know for sure so don't panic, but see what your doc says.

good luck! The Protein Shakes count as Fluid, too...so add them in to your "count" for the day. I'm sorry you're so tight you can't get your fluids down! If you're comfortable doing so, will you post and let me know what he says and if you're doing ok?

In addition to what RM said, just know that you should be able to get more and more fluids in with each passing day. As your healing progresses the swelling from surgery trauma will diminish and you'll be able to get more of everything down... and then bandster hell will likely commence... be tough and stay focused!

I just came back from the my doctors visit and everything seems to be ok. I am getting more liquids down but it does take effort.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
