can we clarify PB vs. vomitting (this is illustrative)

Recommended Posts

I never in a million years imagined myself researching pb and vomit on a Friday night!

A lot of people here are always asking what PB means. Why don't they explain it in the lap band seminars, eh?

I am so confused, but here is my interpretation:

PB

When restricted, food gets stuck by not chewing well enough, eating too fast, or food not agreeing with the band. (it's like russian roulette with each new fill) Painful uncomfortable sensation in chest and sometimes throat. Sliming (excessive saliva) occurs in attempt to help dislodge the object.

for me: I lean over toliet and the food plops out. Sometimes a little finger coaching is needed, which makes me feel bulemic.

Vomitting

As I remember it before getting the band, it included stomach acid, resembled the texture of oatmeal. ( it could vary). It would makes me extremely naseaous and panicky. I would never ever want to do it. I would be clamy and lightheaded.

So tell me so I can know: is this a PB or Vomitting?

I had a bad episode about 8 hours ago with raw carrots that you may have read about. It was a BIG episode that made me suffer for an hour until I just knew the carrot was making a comeback. This included like a gigantic hiccup feeling that I swear I felt my innards spasm as orange carrot puree came out in 3 upheavals. None of the vomitting symptoms I discussed, but definately not an easy "open and plop". Definately not a typial pb. It felt like it came from deeper in my body. Like I made it come up from under the band...

Should I be freaking out and going in for flouro on Monday?

Has this happened to anyone else?

Yes, I know, raw carrots are e-v-i-l

hellllp!!!!

Your episode with the carrots sounds horrid and just like a 'stuck' episode I had on a piece of lettuce a few weeks ago. I Pb'd and slimed first for a couple of hours but the excruciating pain just wouldn't go away and eventually the offending lettuce and more 'ectoplasm' came up at such speed that it came down my nose as well as out of my mouth.

I immediately felt better afterwards. I think in my case the lettuce was clogging up the exit hole of the band, I don't think it was real 'stomach acid vomit'. My surgeon told me to go to liquids for 3 days until the swelling went down and I was fine.

It was a good few weeks beefore I had lettuce again and this time I made sure to chew chew chew.

I hope you are feeling better and that a few days on liquids will sort you out.

Sue

pbing has NEVER been open and plop for me, its much more like your carrot episode, thank god it doesnt happen to me often. Although as time has gone by, I've learned to relax and let it happen and not fight it which means I can usually have it over and done with more quickly - I used to spend up to an hour waiting for relief.

But its still not horrid, scary and awful like vomiting is. I will do ANYTHING to avoid vomiting. Thankfully, I havent actually chucked in about six or seven years, we seem to have passed that stage of the kids bringing home horrible gastro bugs.

I have had the infortunate luck of food stuck and I can tell you now I know exactly what to do when the pain is unbearable. I drink pepsi or another carbonated drink lean over the bowl and it comes right out. I am not vomiting as it is not coming from the belly it is only unlodging the food that as an idiot I have not chewed properly...waited too long to eat and I eat too fast or plain try an eat the wrong food. I cannot do bread at all...and if it is something new it is anyone's guess if goes down.....

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
