Pre-op diet and blood sugar

Recommended Posts

(First posted in the diabetic forum but got no response)

Hi everybody. All my insurance paperwork was submitted this week and I'm hopeful my surgery will be soon. I've been a non-insulin dependant diabetic for about 7 years now. I have never really educated myself on how to follow a diabetic diet, and lately I have occasional panicky low sugar episodes with the sweating and shaking and the whole nine yards until I get some sugar in me. So, I'm concerned about my one week of pre-op Clear liquids. Can I expect to get through that without going into a low-sugar coma? How did you all get through the pre-op diet? :(

Thanks in advance.

I've been a non insulin dependant diabetic for 4 years now and I would say that you need to call surgeon and ask him if you can add some Protein to your diet one time a day maybe that will help. I didn't have to do the one week liquid diet my diet was two weeks but I had to have Instant Breakfast and fruit and for supper I could have 3oz of meat and a salad so my blood sugar was fine. On the up side I am two months post op and already off all my meds so I hope you can do the same.

Ask your surgeon. S/he'll be able to direct you.

Thanks Bobbie, I'm glad to hear you are off all your meds, you're doing great. Were you starving for the 2 weeks or wasn't it too bad?

I was starving the first week and the second week was not as bad but still bad. HA HA. Call your Doctor on monday and find out what they want you to do

I also am a diabetic and I actually had my sugars go up on the post op diet, so I would just test frequently and make sure you drink the Protein Drinks at certain times, but as always check with Dr.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
