Advise about Psychiatry eval???

Recommended Posts

I am preparing myself for the steps toward getting the band. I am a bit nervous about the psychiatry evaluation because I don't know what kind of questions they ask you?? I am worried about not being able to pass(that sounds dumb) but I have never been to a shrink. Can anyone who has been through it give an idea of what I have to go through. I know all doctors are different but I wouldn't mind anyone sharing there expriences.

Thanks

It's a piece of cake. Nothing to worry about. They need to know you're ready to accept a lifelong change. This isn't a diet, it's a way of life. If you tell them you refuse to eat slow, or obey band rules, then they won't operate. I don't know anyone that's failed.

For example, my surgeon won't operate on alcoholics or drug addicts because people don't have good judgement when they're intoxicated. If you sit in your psyche evaluation and tell the therapist that you expect the Band to do all the work, then that says you are unwilling to accept this enormous change.

If you aren't ready to accept a new way of living, then the Band isn't right for you. That's it in a nuthshell.

Does your weight affect your social life? Does it keep you from participating in activities that you enjoy, that help you relieve stress? I would concentrate on those things. I would talk about how you think your quality of life will improve.

I see a psychiatrist anyway, have for years and while I will always have the chemical imbalance that causes my depression, my weight makes me have more negative feelings about myself. Hopefully, my self-esteem will improve as I lose weight and the periods of depression will be fewer and shorter in length.

Good luck!

Colleen

I Was Also Worried, I Did Mine Yesterday. It Was Fine, And Kinda Fun. I Ended Up With A Woman And She Was Great! It Was Short And Sweet. I Made Sure That I Told Her What I Knew About The Surgery Since She Didn't Know Anyything About Banding, Only Bypass. So From Her Report, I Sounded Smart!!lol It'll Be Fine. I Am A Shy Person, And I Don't Share My Personal Stuff With Anyone But A Few Very Close Friends, Family And Of Course My Dh. Good Luck!

I took a 560 question test first. About 100 of the questions were asking me if I ever thought about killing someone just reworded each time LOL! Naw just kidding but some of the questions were weird. I had and appointment with the psych doc who was really sweet and said that nothing was wrong with me!(shocked my sister and mother who swore up and down that someone else took the test for me! lol) I was very honest and upfront about what I wanted to do when I had lost the weight. The number one thing is to ride a horse. He said but you can do that now. I said that would be cruel to the horse LOL!! Don't sweat it be honest and upfront and you will be fine.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
