Dry Heaves day after surgery

Recommended Posts

A couple of times I had the dry heaves the day after my surgery. They say it isn't a problem. I am just worried about it making my band slip or my stomach moving up through the band.

Am I worried about nothing? I will be doing a barium swallow next week....will it show if there is a problem?

Who said it is not a problem. I would call the dr office right away. That band is stitched on the top side to your stomach. If you are having nausea feelings call your dr. get something for that if needed. The stitches need to be set and also the band. The dry heaves is your stomach having spasms maybe. I would not think this is a good thing. Can you get any fluids down maybe warm tea or broth. Good luck:thumbdown::wink:

Call your doc and get a prescription for Phenargan if you are having nausea. Some heaving probably isn't going to hurt you but continued heaving will. Nausea after anesthesia is common and Phenargan (liquid or suppository) is a medication that helps with that.

It happened twice the night after my sugery. I called the surgeons office and they weren't concerned since they had stopped and I'm doing just fine now. I guess they aren't concerned unless it continues....

I go on tuesday for my follow up and they will be doing a barium swallow to check everything. I have never been sick after a surgery before, so it really worried me. It came and went so fast, that I don't think there is much to do, but worry about what might have happened because of it, I just wonder when I will know it is still ok and in place?

I'm self pay, so I'm very paranoid about anything going wrong.

The Barium swallow test will show any issues if they are there. We were required to do this test before surgery and before discharge from the hospital. We don't get to come home unless we pass the Barium Swallow test.

Dry heaving a couple of times after your surgery should be fine. You have made the clinic aware of that and they don't seem to be too concerned. Don't let the some of these posts scare you, I'm sure you will do fine. A lot of people have those same symptoms after surgery because of the anesthetic. If you read these posts on how many people are dry heaving or vomiting after their surgery or from a fill then I would think that we would hear more "slippage" stories then we do. I know that for me, I seem to be on this site more when I need help then when everything is going o.k.

Good Luck!:yikes:

I had the same problem. They told me it was a reaction to the anesthesia. I had the barium x-ray and no problem. It only lasted a few hours. If it keeps up, call your doctor.

I had a lot of dry heaves after my surgery. The worst was the first time I tried standing up. I was still in the hospital at the time, and the nurse just grabbed a bucket and held it under me while she rubbed my back. My guess, from what they told me, is it's a reaction to the anesthesia. They gave me some medicine for it and I felt loads better.

You might want to talk to your doctor, but if they've stopped I don't think you have to worry. My doc warned me about it pre-op, and I was worried about slippage too, but I think one bad day isn't going to ruin you. Especially if there's nothing to throw up.

I'm over a month and a half out, and was CONVINCED I had stretched out my stomach because I wasn't getting full, and therefore eating more than maybe I should have. When I went for my first fill, I did the barium thing and saw my stomach on the monitor and it looked normal.

In the beginning it's trial and error, everyone reacts to surgery, etc. differently, but you'll see when you go to the doc! Good luck.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
