restriction after operation?

Recommended Posts

I was banded last Thursday 1/8/08. I am on the full liquid diet and am feeling fine. My question is do I have any restriction at all yet? I have always been a big Water drinker and I am drinking lots with no issue just like before. I am eating smooth Soup and drinking shakes with no issue just like without band. Just wondering if that is the way it is supposed to be.

I had restriction following surgery for about two weeks, which was from swelling, and I didn't get hungry at all during the liquid diet and mushie phase. I was able to drink pretty normally though, and still can. The initial swelling slowly subsided, but I really didn't go through "bandsters hell" where I was starving between meals. I was getting hungry, but it wasn't as bad as some people seem to experience.

I was banded on the same day. At UCSD there is no fill at the time of surgery (although I have read of doctors that do a fill during surgery), 4 days of Clear Liquids and 10 days of full liquids before blended/pureed foods. I am counting the hours. Apparently I heal pretty quickly and am already hungry :<( I am going to try adding a 3rd Protein Shake and see if that helps.

I had restriction after surgery, because my doctor placed 3cc in my 10cc band during the surgery. Everyone is different as far as restriction is concerned.

The only restriction that I had was for a few weeks after the surgery due to the swelling. You might want to check if they put any saline in your band to see if you have any restriction. From reading on here it seems like most docs don't expect you to have much restriction until the first few fills. It is all a fine tuning process.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
