For those of you with good restriction, how do you get in enough calories?

Recommended Posts

I was told not to have Protein Shakes as a "meal replacement", but I should consider one each day on heavy exercise days and days I am not getting my 60-70 g Protein. If you are not getting enough calories your body will go into starvation mode. I am 12 months out and when I was platuea'ing you have to be patient and continue with good eating and workout habits.

I use the Protein shake to boost my Protein in-take, not as a Meal Replacement. Also, Herbal Life sells a Protein Drink that is a flavored beverage - mixed with Water not milk - and it is good! - it also meets my low sugar requirements. They have a berry and a peach mango. I mix them with twice the amount of Water and feel like I'm getting a real treat. I highly recommend it.

I agree that the EAS whey is the best tasting shake mix. Again it meets the low sugar vs. high protein requirements. I get mine at Target. And you can mix in all kinds of stuff (Peanut Butter, banana, etc). Hmmmm. Isn't funny how when you're not gulping you're food and reducing what you eat you really appreciate the taste more?

I have been totally down lately about my exercising. I was doing good until August when I had minor back surgery. Then I had minor surgery on my feet - then got infections.

The snow and ice nix any outdoor activity and our community center doesn't open the workout room until 6am so I can't get in there to exercise. I feel so blah.

On another note, I eat nice small meals but I refuse to make it taste like cardboard. - I don't want to feel like I'm being punished. So if I'm serving a sauce with the food I still put a teaspoon or so on my food. Personally, I have not counted calories. I watch my protein in-take and do my best to eat properly balanced meals.

I was banded May 2008 and have lost 86 pounds and life is GOOD!

Jacqui - do you sell pin up posters? You look good!!

What a great thread, some great information here. I just wanted to add that the Muscle Milk brand Protein Powder is Lactose free and mixes nicely with Water, and is sweetened with Splenda. (since someone had mentioned Protein powders not being Lactose free)

Jacqui & Brad thank you so much for the advice I'm going to the gym and work my keester off !! I love the site for things like this... The hardest thing was trying to cut through all the BS and get to the meat and potatoes of everything. I will head out and find the heart monitor device you spoke about. I would really like to learn how much I burn in calories for the day. I almost body that darn bodybug from the biggest looser but the 299.00 price tag made me think twice.:( Again everyone thanks for the advice I'm so pumped and ready to achieve my goals. (( Big Hugs))

Good luck Heather! I took a look at the body bug too and I would like to have it but the $$$ is too much for me. When you shop for a heart rate monitor make certain you get one that tracks your personal calories because not all of them do. I have a Polar F6 and I love it! I paid about 90 bucks at Dunhams. After a few weeks of working hard (especially intense cardio) you'll be surprised how much cardiovascular progress you've made. You're heart rate recovery and resting heart rate will improve every week. That is so motivating!

There are online calculators to also assist you determining your basal metabolic rate so you can find out about how many calories your body burns just existing. It's not exact but it gets you in the ballpark. Right now, I'm using fitday to track all of my food intake and calories burnt (basal, lifestyle, exercise). I bought the program but they also have a free online application.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
