Exercise Success

Recommended Posts

I was looking at a pictures of me and my weight loss over the last couple of months (for those who don't know, I've decided against the Lapband and to do it on my own) and I'm getting quite good results.

I think the key to my success though is that I didn't go flat out with the exercise straight away. I started it out slowly, only walking 3 days a week for 30 mins... and over the last couple of months have increased it to walking in the morning 5 days a week, Personal Training 3 days a week and running in the evenings 5 days a week.

If I had of started off that way, I would of given up as it would of been so hard for me. But the weight is consistently dropping off and I'm getting fitter.

I was wondering whats been your success to keep motivated to exercise?

I signed up for a triathlon. Now I have a deadline so I can't slack off.

Over 3 years ago I set out to prove to myself that I could run. Now I run daily to prove to myself that I am not a slacker. Somewhere in there I fell in love.

Just an FYI. Those of us with a band did it on our own too. We just went about it in a slightly different way to you.

I get that you're doing it on your own, I guess all I was saying was that I'm doing it without the aid of the band. I'm not saying I'm better then you or you're better then me, we've all got the goal at the end of the day

I am not doing it. It's done. It's been done for quite a few years now. And I will admit that it does rub the wrong way when people say they are "doing it on their own". It makes the band sound like some sort of moral failure.

I wish you luck "doing it on your own", and I hope you have better luck than I did... My "on my own" year was 2004.

Well maybe that is your own insecurity about the band... I have no problems with anyone who has it done, I've got very close friends who have had the band done, hell I nearly did and then decided it was not for me.

You make it sound like I won't succeed because I've never been banded.

This is not what I did this thread for, but thanks anyway

I didn't intend to say that you won't be able to lose weight without a band. I lost 20 - 30kg a few times over before I was banded. The trick was keeping it off.

In 2004 alone I lost about 50kg. Granted, I lost 25kg, gained 30 right back. Lost 25kg, ganied it all right back.

Time, and maturity taught me what I was doing wrong, and I did something about it.

As for insecurity? Yep. You got me. I am a quivering mess.

It feels good to get that out in the open!!

LMAO

Find an exercise you *love* and do it. It's the best advice I was ever given. It worked. I have been at goal for close to 3 years now, and provided I exercise daily, doing something I love, and eat right, I stay the same weight.

Wow, first nasty person I've come across and sadly you're from Australia too.. oh well. Just because you couldn't over come it on your own means nothing to me and my journey.

I've never once spoken down to anyone on this site for their choices and no-one has spoken down to me. I'm allowed and should be proud to say I'm doing this on my own and I don't see why you should get offended for me stating that.

Time and maturity has taught me everything I've done wrong and now how to rectify it.

Each to their own, if you don't like what I post, don't post in my threads, quite simple, I really didn't think I'd come across someone trying to make me feel bad for my decision.

As for the exercise, I just wanted to know what kept everyone motivated.

Babe. I am not nasty. I just don't talk crap. I don't hand hold, and I don't coddle.

I do wish you the best. I hope you can "do it own you own" But saying

oh well. Just because you couldn't over come it on your own means nothing to me and my journey.
Simply proves that banding, to you appears to be a moral failure.

A lot of us here were "unable to overcome it on our own" You might want to *not* talk like that in front of the rest of the class. Tends to get them a wee bit worked up

And I wasn't trying to make you feel bad. I just shared my journey.

(I have to say, I as I read that post I pictured a little girl with one hand on her hip, and the other wagging a finger at me. There was also a foot stomp thrown in there... I get the best visuals sometimes. Thanks for that!)

Not nasty? You attack me because I said something that you took the wrong way? Again, I'm so don't care how anyone loses weight, be the band, gastric bypass or on their own... I refuse to let people make me feel bad because I want to do it on my own.

Visualise as you please, I'm glad you got a laugh out of it. I'm not even mad as I type this, because well it's an internet forum, and quite a good one but you take the good with the bad.

I'm not sure where I asked for you to hold my hand or coddle me?

As for the "moral failure" yeah I've gone back and forth on how "I" feel about that, not how I feel about other people doing it. In conclusion to how I feel about it? Each person chooses their destiny, I chose a slightly different way to you.

As for "not wanting to talk "that" way" oh please, we're all adults and I didn't talk anyway that I felt was dis-respectful and if you took it that way then there is nothing I can do about it.

I suspect she is filled with shame at the thought of someone as nasty as me coming from her great land.

Oh, and this close to Australia Day too!

Quick! Get the smelling salts!

I have to ask....what the heck is that supposed to mean???

I'm sad that someone can be so nasty on a site that I've found nothing but great supportive ppl and it's sad she is from Australia, which yes is my home country and I'm very proud to be from here.

But go ahead, gang up, I'm not fussed

While I wish you well, FallOutGirl, the odds are not in your favor. We know that diets don't work and we've know that since at least WWII, if not earlier. I personally only know one person who lost more than 50 lb. and kept it off for more than 5 years. I have heard of two others (famous people). That's 3 people out of millions.

They say that insanity is doing the same thing over and over and hoping for a different result. I would add to that that insanity is thinking that somehow you'll be the exception and going for the 0.001% odds instead of going for the 75% odds.

We've all been insane because we've all done it. But I've chosen to get off the yo-yo dieting merry-go-round and try something with much better odds. Maybe some day you'll get to that point too.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
