Hello my name is Maggie and I am addicted to food....

I am new on this site and have not yet made the "appointment" to see my physician. I am 5'7" and weigh 224#, my BMI is over 35 and I have PCOD which makes me a high risk for diabetes (which also runs in my family) I guess I am just afraid that my Dr. or insurance company will deny me so I'm fearfull of going. (Stupid right?) I should just woman up and go.

Welcome!!! (from one Maggie to another)

I have my surgery in 2 days, and I can't wait. I too have PCOD, but i'm quite a bit larger than you. I'm currently right at 300lbs.

It's been a long 4 month journey for me, but it's so worth it.

Best of luck!

Unfortunately chances are very good that your insurance will deny you.... at BMI 35-40 they generally want to see 2 co-morbidities, and I'm not sure if they count PCOS. But it's worth a try. At least start documenting the weight and the efforts so that if they deny you now you'll at least be leaving a record of to establish an ongoing problem for a re-try down the road.

I was a low BMI patient with no significant comorbidities and paid cash..... a lot of money but well worth it!!

Best of luck on your journey!

Yes thats what I am afraid of...Denial..... but I do have documentation for the last 6 years from my Dr. for visits all relating to weight management, he has put me on every known prescription weight loss drug out there and none of them worked very long. Do you think that would help with my insurance?

Depends on your insurance company. Find out their criteria and go from there. I am 5' 7" also with a starting weight of 222. Just about like you. I have FEDERAL employee BCBS and was approved in very little time. My only comorbidity was severe reflux causing multiple aspirations pneumonias yearly.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
